August Tree Care Volunteer Opportunities:
Gather Your Group!
Recently, a team of Citizens Bank employees and interns approached NTC about scheduling their own tree care volunteer event in Newport. The team joined us for weeding and mulching of young trees in Miantonomi Park on a sunny summer day. NTC staff enjoyed teaching the group how to care for trees and why they're such an important part of our city's living landscape. We look forward to making this an annual event!

Do you have a group that would like to join us? NTC encourages garden clubs, work teams, scout and home school groups, and more to reach out if you'd like to organize a volunteer work day. No experience is necessary. Tree Corps will return for our annual Miantonomi reforestation project in October.

Plant highlights include the lost gordonia, espaliered fruit trees, and the rare European medlar. Please dress for the weather. Water is highly encouraged.

Arboretum Tour: Harbor House

Walk alongside us as we explore Harbor House Arboretum. This historic property has a main building consisting of six houses built at different times, including a Gothic-style chapel. With views overlooking Narragansett Bay, plants can be exposed to harsh winds and salt spray. Mature specimens thriving here include an ancient yew and London Planetree, believed to be original plantings from the 1850s. The mission of Harbor House Arboretum is to be consistent in replanting efforts to maintain the existing tree collection and canopy, maintaining the property's green diversity, and to encourage the residents here to engage in the landscape.
