STEM(M) AT ST. LUKE'S

Featuring: STEM(M) THEATER CLASS

Continuing our shout-outs for current STEM(M) integration in the classroom, here is a recap of the message given to the faculty from our Theater Director, Hannah Grace Smith.

The Theatre Technology and Production class incorporates STEM(M) extensively. Science (S), specifically physics, is used to study light and sound theory. Technology (T) controls our lighting and sound equipment, including LED lights, handheld microphones, headsets, and wired microphones. Engineering (E) and Mathematics (M) are also critical components in theater. Specifically, architecture is used to design aesthetically pleasing sets, and engineering principles ensure they are stable and safe. Center Stage students learn from the Medical (M) component through the study of voice pedagogy. Students gain a better understanding of how their voices work anatomically and how to generate a more efficient and healthy sound.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD SUCCESS AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Last week, members of St. Luke's Track and Field competed at the AHSAA Indoor State 1A-3A Championships. Emma Hataway represented our girls team with a 6th place finish in girls shot put and a PR of 28'10". Brooks Musial finished second in boys shot put with a huge PR of 45'7". Alex Prieto claimed the State Championship for the boys shot put with a PR of 45'10.5." Garrett Dolbear finished 3rd in the boys 3200 with a PR of 10:08:48 and claimed the State Championship in the boys 400m, running a PR and setting a new 1A-3A Indoor State Record of 50:22.

Notably, all of our St. Luke's athletes had personal bests in competition at the Indoor State Meet and our 3 boys scored a total of 34 points as a team for a 6th place finish overall.

These student athletes represented St. Luke's with hard work and determination and represent some of the best of the best student-athletes in the State of Alabama and we're so extremely proud of them!

MUSIC CLASS IS EVERYTHING!

Mr. D's music and movement class is the perfect place to move, sing, and play.

Our K3 students enjoy the fun of making music with Mr. D each week!

ST. LUKE'S HI-Q TEAM SUCCESS

Last week, St. Luke's Hi-Q team won 34-12-12! They brought along some freshman and sophomore students to cheer them on and to learn the ropes! Great job, Wildcats!

WHO ELSE IS READY FOR SPRING?

Our K4 students are learning about the fascinating topic of hibernation and how animals survive the cold winter months. Students were encouraged to bring a stuffed animal to “hibernate.” Hopefully, these animals will sleep for their hibernation entirety and then emerge from their den on the first day of spring hungry and ready to find food!

MOBILE COUNTY COMMISSIONER

CONNIE HUDSON VISITS ST. LUKE'S

Mobile County Commissioner for District 2, Connie Hudson, and District 2 Administrator Grace Abernathy recently visited St. Luke’s to tour the new STEM(M) Center. During the visit, they had the opportunity to see firsthand how St. Luke's is enacting its vision to change the way students experience the world through STEM(M). Current students discussed their academic preparation and how St. Luke's fuels their passion for a future career in science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine.

CIVIL ENGINEERING & ARCHITECTURE CLASS WITH MRS. HAYNES

This year, we added a new Civil Engineering and Architecture course where students gain a thorough understanding of building and site design and development by employing mathematical, scientific, and engineering practices to design projects. They use real 3D architectural design software to design and document their work.

Seeing our students challenged with designing and constructing homes is truly inspiring. They have gained a deeper understanding of the significance, influence and implementation of civil engineering and architecture in the context of building and design development. We look forward to seeing the finished result of their hard work and dedication, stay tuned for updates!
