· The largest Porsche Parade ever; over 1000 cars attended the event held at the Kalahari Resort in the Poconos, Pennsylvania. Check out Collin Fat's article elsewhere in the DRIFTER.
· Another article to checkout is the one by Joe Kucinski from Riesentoter Region. It was his first Parade. Check it out at
· I was co-chair for the TSD Rally held on Tuesday that is one of the major competitive events. We had 102 Porsches start the 4 hour event and had 100 Porsches scored at the finish. We used the Richta scoring and timing system (using your cell phone in your car) that tabulated the 14 checkpoints used. Happy July!
Thanks to all who helped and joined us at the Red Bus Brewing dinner on June 5. Everyone seemed to have a good time - it was great to see everyone socializing and talking about their cars. Specific thanks to Erik Schmid, our host, who helped make this a successful dinner with more than 50 people attending.
For July, as usual, we have the Saturday Breakfast on the first Saturday, July 2. Please let Jerry Alter know if you plan to attend.
On July 4, there will be a 4th of July parade in the Pocket/Greenhaven neighborhood. The parade starts on the corner of Windbridge Drive and South Land Park Drive at 10 am, and progresses all the way up Windbridge Drive to Garcia Bend Park. Come out and enjoy the parade and cheer on your Porsche friends. It’s especially fun for kids since the parade participants throw candy. Also, there will be food and activities at Garcia Bend Park at the conclusion of the parade. This is an event of interest, not an official SVR event, but some members and their cars, will be participating in the parade.
Our SVR series of autocrosses continues on July 9 with another driving event at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows. You need not be competing in the series to participate and get a thrill. Register on MSR for this autocross.
Susan and Noah Bentley are hosting a dinner at Fat’s Asia Bistro in Folsom on Wednesday, July 20 - always great food and friends at a dinner’s at Fat’s. Register on MSR for this dinner.
And, we also have a tour for you in July. Ernie and Wendy Bulhoes are leading the Snake Bite Tour to the Cobra Museum in Martinez on Saturday, July 22. Register on MSR for this tour. The tour is limited to 40 people, so if you are interested, register soon.

A gracious host, perfect weather, an awe-inspiring mountain vista, fantastic roads, frequent rest stops, a refreshing ocean breeze, beautiful cars, and wonderful people. Who could ask for anything more? That was the inaugural edition of Mount Tam Trek. By unanimous decree, we will do it again.
Congratulations to first-place winners Simon Levear and Bill Colisch. Second place went to Tyler Backman , Tierra Groff and Tevian (holding the trophy up high) and third went to Noah and Abby Arliss. Checkpoint 5 was deleted because some cars triggered it while rounding the traffic circle.
We staged at Hi Tec Automotive in San Rafael. After the traditional signing of releases, distribution of documents, and a brief safety meeting, we were on our way up Mount Tamalpais for the first two checkpoints. Next, we headed west on scenic Ridgecrest Boulevard to Point Reyes National Seashore, where the serpentine roads lead us from the Bear Valley Visitor Center to the light house, chimney rock, Drakes Beach, and North Beach. Lastly, we made our way past Nicasio Reservoir to finish at Mary’s Pizza Shack in Novato.
We used a “modified Monte Carlo” format which eliminated all the math associated with traditional time-speed-distance rallies. Rather than being assigned an average speed and told approximate location of the checkpoint, we were given the exact location of each checkpoint (including a picture of the landmark) and the exact time we were due. This new, no-math format was a big hit, and we plan to use it on future events.
Speaking of future events, we are adding a free rally school on Saturday July 16th at Sonoma State University. The school will be geared to first-timers and will focus on following route instructions and the use of the Richta GPS rally system. We are going to dig deep into the Richta system and even experienced rallyists will probably learn something new. PCA membership is not required and any make car may participate. Registration is open at MSReg.com/SummerRallySchool. After the classroom presentation and discussion, we will run four short practice GPS rallies, a gimmick rally, a traditional time-speed-distance (TSD) rally, a Monte Carlo Rally with math, and a modified Monte Carlo with no math.
Finally, remember to save August 13 – 14 for our two-day Twin Pine Rally. Registration and more information are available at MSReg.com/TwinPine.
Thanks,
Jim

M_AX Fun
By John Leet, SVR Autocross Chair
Preparing For Your
First Autocross Event
Have you been curious about Autocross?
Autocross is a great opportunity for you to learn car control skills and how to drive your car at its limit in a safe environment. If you are interested in autocross but missed the opportunity to attend the SVR autocross school, please feel free to come to attend any of our events. We have instructors that are more than happy to spend time with anyone who is new to the sport and provide you with all of the basics of autocross and ride with you to help with driving techniques. About all you need is a helmet, and SVR has loaner helmets available. If you have any questions, please email autocross@svr-pca.org.
Registration is done through MotorsportReg, where you will have the opportunity to request an instructor. Signing up as a new driver is as simple as that! Our next event is on July 9th. You can register here: http://msreg.com/2022SVRAX6
|
Preparing yourself
Bring sun screen, a hat, and wear comfortable clothing. Shoes must be closed toe, no sandals. A portable chair is also nice to have. Water is provided, but many folks bring a small cooler with snacks and drinks. A tire gauge is helpful for adjusting tire pressure. Print a copy of the course map, and get a good night’s rest!
Preparing your Porsche
Check fluid levels (oil, brake, coolant) prior to the event. Check tire pressures to make sure they are at factory specs, and that your tires have plenty of tread. You may also want to check with your Porsche service provider to see if they can perform a basic safety inspection. Remove all loose items in your glove box and trunk as these items can present a danger while driving.
Car Numbers
Each driver will need a unique car number. If you do not have a permanent number assigned, during registration simply pick an available number. Race day numbers can be made from painter’s tape, or regular competitors will register a number with SVR and purchase a set of reusable numbers.
Helmets
Helmets are required safety equipment for all drivers. Drivers must wear a helmet with a Snell rating of SA2010 or newer. If you do not own an approved Snell rated helmet, the club provides a limited number of loaner helmets that will be issued at check-in.
Event check-in
Prior to arrival, you should have already signed the waiver using the SpeedWaiver feature when you signed up for the event in MotorsportReg. When you arrive, check in at the SVR trailer and confirm your run group and course work station. Course work is important to ensure a successful event. If you are new, the event organizers will provide instruction for your specific duties.
Tech Inspection
The first thing to do following check-in will be to affix your car numbers to aid in the inspection process. Each car will need to be inspected to confirm that it is technically sound for autocross competition. You may need to bring your car to a tech inspection area, or an inspector will come to your car. Open your trunk and engine compartment to signal your car is ready for inspection.
Course Walk
We encourage all novices and experienced drivers alike to walk the course prior to the driver’s meeting. This can be done individually, or you can join the group for a guided course walk conducted by an instructor.
Driver’s Meeting
A mandatory driver’s meeting is conducted prior to the start of each event, where the autocross chair will go over basic safety rules and general itinerary of the day’s competition.
Run Groups
The number of run groups is dependent on the number of cars participating in the event. Usually there are two or three, and you will alternate running, working the course, or resting.
Once Competition Starts
Pay close attention to other cars on the course. Watch their lines and breaking points, how they exit turns and apply the accelerator.
|
Now it’s your turn
Bring your car on grid promptly, and lower your windows prior to entering the course (PCA regulation). If your car has PASM, you should set it to Sport/Sport Plus. Most novices will want to leave PSM active, but as you gain more experience and have comfort with controlling the car, you will most likely improve your times by turning it off.
If you are a novice, you will most likely have an instructor riding along. Listen carefully to his/her instructions. Take your time and don’t try to get a fast time on your first run. It is more important to learn the line and the course.
And most importantly – be safe and have fun!!
You will start to get a feel for how much you think you can improve your time to set personal goals. There is good camaraderie with other drivers who will be happy to share tips and techniques.
We hope to see you out on the course!

DINNER AT RED BUS BREWING
By Sally Boeck
Photos Sally Boeck
More than 50 people enjoyed a great time at Red Bus Brewing for a dinner on Thursday night, June 9th. Many drove their Porsches and parked them in front of the brewery for our viewing pleasure. It was a casual, low-key dinner, and everyone had time to socialize and talk about their cars.
Many of the people who joined us also were kind enough to contribute to Share of the Wealth, which included bottles of wine, a leather Pebble Beach wine carrier, Fireweed Honey, a Crab necklace, an inverter, a couple of books, and two etched stemless wine glasses provided by Rachel Nelson of Reflections in Glass. Thanks to all who donated!
Also, many thanks to Erik Schmid, our host at Red Bus Brewing. He appointed someone to coordinate the Porsche Parking, and joined in on the fun by also parking two Porsches he owns in front of the brewery.

Porsche Parade 2022 Sets Attendance Record
The 2022 Porsche Parade was held at the Kalahari Resort in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania from June 12-18th. According to Parade chair, Ron Gordon, it was the most attended Parade ever with more than 1,100 primary attendees and some 2,700 members in total. There were at least 1,000 Porsches parked in the reserved parking lot not including the amazing special edition and historic cars on display as well. Wow, it was a great sight to be seen.
I think that the Parade committee was more focused on attracting the young families with children to attend Parade and this could not be more evident than in the 110 PCA Parade Juniors in attendance. This number far exceeded any Parade Junior’s participation ever and a lot of the credit goes to PCA National Juniors chair, Jay Gratton. Having a huge water park at the resort, I am sure, was a big draw.
The weather for most of the week was amazingly mild with some rain experienced in the early AM each day. The concours on Monday was initially moved from outside to inside one of the very large ballrooms at the resort due to a forecast for rain. However, on Sunday the concours was again moved outdoors adjacent to the convention center as the weather forecast improved. It was in fact a bit warmer that expected and all competitors as well as spectators enjoyed a fantastic concours, clear skies and no rain.
|
|
|
|
The weather did not cooperate for the 2nd day of the 2 -day autocross held at Pocono Motor Speedway, a short 20-minute drive from the hotel. With torrential rain, lighting and thunder, the event was delayed about an hour. Over-all for the two-day autocross, there were some 190 cars signed up with the most stock Porsche running on Wednesday and the improved, modified and most GT cars running on Thursday. My hats off to National Autocross chair, Paul Kudra, for his support in making this year’s Parade Autocross run smoothly and on time. For the past several Parades, autocross attendance at Parade has been shrinking and it is hard to determine the reasons. I believe that issues related to the past autocrosses have perhaps impacted attendee perspective on the event and we hope that for Parade 2023 at La Quinta in Palm Springs we will see a growing trend.
At the one of major banquets, it was announced by Parade Chair Ron Gordon that Parade 2024 will be held in Birmingham, Alabama with the resort property location to be announced at a future date. The dates are June 9-16, 2024.
30 members from Zone 7 attended Parade this year. The attendees included the following members:
Nanci Bishop and Paul Smith, Randy and Lisa Shaffer, Alaric Sales, Kirk and Carolyn Doberenz, Lori Schutz and David Clardy, Gerry Brown, Jessica Toney and Peter Schneider, George and Shirley Neidel, Michael and Erika Grasso, John and Honore D’Angelo, Robert and Connie Waldrop, Craig Steele, Michael Hinton, Rik Larson, Craig and Mary Lou Kugler, Collin and Elaine Fat, and Tom and Sandi Provasi.

I would also like to mention that two members from Zone 7 drove from California to Pennsylvania! Yikes, the most direct round trip makes that a 2,100-mile journey without detours for sightseeing. Congrats to Craig Steele and Mike Hinton from Redwood Region!

L/R; Craig Steele, Mike Hinton, and Collin Fat
There were dozens of PCA members in attendance who attended their first Parade and yet there were many who had been to more than 40 Parades over the past decades. It is amazing, that even with the impact of Covid the past several years that Parade attendance seems more popular than ever and a bucket list item for many. This was my 8th Parade and one of the most fun.

Zone Autocross and Concours Series Update;
There were no Zone autocross events scheduled for June with only regional events held by Sacramento Valley at Thunderhill Raceway on June 11-12th, Golden Gate holding an event at Crows Landing on June 25th and Loma Prieta region holding the event at Crows on June 26th.
Several date changes were recently made to the Zone 7 Autocross series calendar due to issues with site availability with Loma Prieta and Golden Gate Regions switching their Zone events in July to August. The new dates will be on August 27th and August 28th with Golden Gate Region hosting on Saturday and Loma Prieta Region hosting the series on August 28th. Both regions are hoping to schedule their July dates to another weekend with both events being regional events only and will not count for Zone 7 points. Sacramento Valley had scheduled a July 9th event at Thunderhill, and that event is still on but instead of being a Zone event it will now be a regional event.
Total Zone Ax events counting toward year end awards will be 9 events instead of 10.
|
|
|
|
Zone 7 Concours Series Update:
Sacramento Valley Region held the first Concours of the 2022 Zone series on June 5th with 43 judged cars participating. The weather did not cooperate with rain occuring in the early morning hours. Due to some logistical magic performed by concours chair Al Price and Kim Nelson, most of the entrants were moved into the covered shop at Porsche Rocklin while a dozen or so entrants remained outside in the rain. The reprieve for these competitors was the fact that they were not judged but received points, none the less, to enable all to compete in the year end Zone competition.
|
|
|
|
The Silver State Concours D ’Elegance, was hosted by the Sierra Nevada Region on June 26th at Lampe Park in Gardnerville, located just south of Reno, Nevada. There were 17 judged cars in the competition with another
20 cars on display. Results should be posted on the Zone 7 website.
