This workshop is designed for: Social workers (LCSW, LMSW, LISW, BSW, AAW), psychologists (Ph.D, Psy.D, Ed.D), school counselors, school psychologists, licensed counselors (LMHC, LCMHC, CMHC, LPC, LCPC), marriage and family therapists (LMFT, LIMFT), art therapists, play therapists, occupational therapists, graduate students, and others in the mental health-related field.

Course Description:
Since the year 2000, an astounding 50 big-budget superhero movies have been released at the box office. There have been also 30 major vampire movies, eight Harry Potter films, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, two Star Wars films, and two Matrix movies. Altogether, that makes almost 100 big-budget movies featuring characters with various superhuman abilities, released just since 2000, and they are consistently among the highest grossing movies.
Children’s fascination with superhero’s dates back years. Superman first came out in the 1938 and since then children have been using superhero’s in their play. This workshop will teach play therapist about the symbolism behind individual superhero’s and how to incorporate this into their play therapy sessions.  Superhero play is appropriate at any age, and play therapists will learn different techniques to use this concept with populations from childhood all the way through adulthood.  

Learning Objectives:

1) Describe the history of superheroes
2) Identify selected superheroes and their symbolism in play therapy
3) Describe the cultural context of superheroes
4) Demonstrate how to integrate superheroes into play therapy with children
5) State the different genres of superheroes’
6) Demonstrate how to incorporate superheroes into different age ranges when using directive play therapy 
Presenter:
Julia Knach is currently the owner and founder of My Crossing Paths Counseling Center. Julia was previously the Manager of Clinical Services at Baltimore Child Abuse Center (BCAC) and before that she was the Clinical Supervisor with Family and Children’s Services (FCS), supervising both Baltimore City and County. She works with all populations dealing with trauma and abuse. Prior to joining FCS, she worked at Hope Health Systems satellite office. Here she worked with families throughout Baltimore City that were dealing with both trauma and addictions. She is currently an adjunct professor at CCBC, teaching in the human service counseling department. She recently published her first book called Crossing Paths: The Intersection between Trauma and Addictions. She received her BA from Arcadia University in 2002, where she received her BA in Art’s for psychology. During her time in undergraduate, she spent a year in Australia studying abroad. She attended University of Baltimore and received her master’s degree in Applied Psychology with a minor in Forensic. She is currently in school for her PsyD at California Southern University. She grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and has spent most of her adult life in Maryland.


Cancellation Policy:

Written notification of cancellation must be received in our office at least 10 business days prior to a training for a refund. A $25.00 cancellation fee will be deducted from the refund. There will be no refund for cancellation notification less than 10 business days.

CBPS reserves the right to cancel a training due to inclement weather or insufficient enrollment. In the event of such cancellation, you will receive a full refund.
