The Messenger of St. Mark's | After Pentecost | August 10, 2023

For your thought:

[Jesus] said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

--Matthew 14:29-31

Surviving & Preventing Abuse: St. Mark's Survivors Share Their Stories

Each summer at St. Mark's we work to get ready for a new school and program year. Part of getting ready is renewing our commitment to making St. Mark's a Safe Church, for everyone--including children, youth, elders, and other vulnerable people. One step we can take to prevent abuse of all kinds, including sexual abuse, is to openly talk about it as a church community. Talking about difficult subjects in the context of a safe, supportive, spiritual community can be healing for those who have been impacted by abuse and also plays an important role in protecting others from experiencing abuse.

At the end of August, we will offer a two-part Safe Church Forum at St. Mark's

Part 1 (Sunday, August 20th, 11:30 a.m.): members of St. Mark's who have been impacted by abuse will share their experiences as part of a panel discussion on Surviving Abuse.

Part 2 (Sunday, August 27th, 11:30 a.m.): we'll review/highlight the basic Safe Church policies that all members of St. Mark's are expected to uphold as part of our commitment to making St. Mark's a Safe Church.

If you have been impacted by abuse and would like to discuss your experience with a member of St. Mark's clergy and/or participate in our panel discussion on August 20th, please contact Mother Sylvia (via email here) to schedule an appointment for further conversation.

Small Group Conversation: Spirituality and the 12 Steps

Breathing Underwater: Spirituality and the 12 Steps

A Community Conversation with Cole McLaren & Thomas Russell

Sunday, September 3rd, 11:15am in the Library

"We are all addicted in some way. When we learn to identify our addiction, embrace our brokenness, and surrender to God, we begin to bring healing to ourselves and our world. In his book, "Breathing Under Water: Spirituality & the Twelve Steps", Richard Rohr shows how the gospel principles in the Twelve Steps can free anyone from any addiction—from an obvious dependence on alcohol or drugs to the more common but less visible addiction that we all have to sin."

How does addiction (to ideas, beliefs, habits, toxic relationships, and/or substances) constrain our freedom and impede our flourishing? How might the Gospel, the 12 Steps, and/or Contemplative Prayer and Practice help us all experience more freedom and the fullness of life that God desires for us? Join St. Mark's members Thomas Russell and Cole McLaren for a community conversation as we begin to explore these important questions together. If you are interested in being part of this conversation, but can't join the gathering on September 3rd, please contact Thom (via email here) or Cole (via email here).

Join St. Mark's Formation Team for Children & Youth

As a faith community we ALL share responsibility for supporting the spiritual growth of the next generation. There are countless ways for each of us to build relationships and build faith with the children and youth at St. Mark's. One of these ways is to join the formation team and help facilitate one of our youth groups or Sunday School Classes. Sunday School resumes on Sunday, September 9th and we are looking for members who are interested in joining our teams!

If you are interested in learning more or getting involved with our Godly Play class (ages ~2-8), please contact Mother Sylvia via email here

If you are interested in learning more or getting involved with our upper elementary (ages ~8-12), middle school (ages ~12-14) or high school (ages~14-18) youth groups, please contact Deacon David via email here.
