Heads Up!!

There's a lot in this week's "What's Happening." Ya'll are busy people! You might need to read through several times to catch it all.

Bible Study

Mark 8:27-9:8

There are several things that you might recognize from this text:

"Get behind me, Satan!", "...let them take up their cross and follow me.", and the Transfiguration of Jesus.

So many things going on at once, just like in our world today... Where do we focus our attention? It can be challenging to figure that out. What gets in the way of doing what Jesus calls us to do? We might have mountaintop experiences, but not everyone can make it to the top of the mountain, so we need to come down and do the work of Christ. With the help of Jesus, we can make a difference right where we are. Where can you help this someone this week?

Synod Council Report

The NWIM Synod Council met January 27.

Some of the business conducted:

  • Accepting a Policy Regarding Sexual Misconduct by Rostered Ministers
  • Archiving certain policies that were no longer pertinent, and reviewing/revising others
  • The work of a task force to address ways lay leaders might serve in congregations in our synod
  • The importance & support of Diaper Banks in specific areas in the synod (Resolution 3 from the 2023 Synod Assembly)
  • The creation of a work group to implement ways to support the dignity, honor, and rights of transgender humans (Resolution 4 from the 2023 Synod Assembly)
  • The creation of a workgroup to discuss and propose next steps in condemning the use of the firing squad as a method of execution (Resolution 5 from the 2023 Synod assembly)
  • Approval of budgets FYE 2025 and FYE 2026

Blessings, Pastor Ann.

Annual Meeting Recap

Everyone was very engaged in the annual meeting this year with 35 in attendance. Much of the time spent was discussing changing our constitution to better match the ELCA constitution, changing wording to have more inclusive pronouns, name changes, and a few additions to help the council run effectively.

During the financial report we spent time on what it would take to hire Pastor Ann at full time status. That would boil down to needing an additional $26,000 per year or an increase of $2167 per month in contributions..

We got a group picture at the end.

From Nancy & Steve Duff:

Members of New Day, thank you for the gift cards presented to us in recognition of our work as financial secretaries. We are happy to be a part of this congregation. Steve and Nancy Duff.

From Dick Johnson:

I would like to thank the congregation for the gift certificate. I sure appreciated it. Thank you. Dick Johnson.

2024 Council Members are Merlene Brockway, Cathy Arvidson, Nancy Mahoney-Martian, Brent Swanson, Paulette Kirsch, Arnie Erickson, David Roth, and Carol Christensen

The 2024 Annual Meeting Minutes were accepted at the end of the meeting, and will be included in next years packet send out to review prior to the meeting.

Council Installation

We will have a council installation at the beginning of our worship service on February 18th.

February is Black History Month

As we begin the Month of February, I want to remind you that it's Black History Month. As we seek to be anti-racist, it's helpful for us to be informed. One way we might do that is to take the opportunity to learn more about people of color... in general, and in our community. Some resources can be found on the website of the Idaho Falls African American Alliance.

Galatians 3:29:

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Aside from the monthly noisy offering they will be doing some bigger fundraisers as they will need to raise $4000 total for the trip. You can also use the button below to give online! Just put Youth Gathering where appropriate!

The group of Luther Height's sponsored Idaho youth headed to the National Youth Gathering (24 youth at last count - Anora and Robert from our congregation) are holding a fundraiser event "A Night in New Orleans" at Shepherd of the Valley in Boise on March 8. It includes dinner, live music and a silent auction. Tickets are $20 for anyone that might be looking for an excuse to visit the Boise area.

If you are unable to attend but would still like to support the youth, Kortney Klinkel is collecting donations of money, or donations of items for the silent auction (i.e. a themed basket movie night, art, weekend getaway, wine and cheese party, other). Please contact Kortney Klinkel for more information klinkel@gmail.com 303-818-9350.
