Design Matters
Before I came to Modern Memoirs, my career was focused on children’s literature, and I continue to work as an author, reviewer, and consultant in that field. I have a particular interest in how children respond to illustration and book design. In fact, I wrote a book (pictured at right) for teachers, librarians, parents, and other caregivers introducing my Whole Book Approach storytime model, which I created in association with The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art.
This professional background in analyzing book design and supporting others’ responses to it gives me a keen appreciation for the design work we carry out at Modern Memoirs. For the most part, our clients are not creating books with a child audience in mind; however, good design transcends age categories. A font choice can reinforce the voice of a text, cover art can pique readers’ interest, and layout can enhance a text’s accessibility and ease of reading. Ultimately, design is what transforms a manuscript into a book, and I am incredibly proud of the talented people at Modern Memoirs, chief among them Nicole Miller and Ali de Groot, who work with our clients to make their books look, feel, and read just as they wish them to.
