“I am grateful for the opportunity to get together with family and for the freedom of worship.”

I have a wonderful

family and great

people who care for me.

I thank God for my life.

— Sister Virginia Rose Carroll

On November 13, Sister Marie Therese Sherwood (right) joined parish youth and members of the St. Vincent DePaul Society of the Catholic Community of St. Matthias in delivering food baskets to Franklin Food Bank in Somerset, N.J. Their efforts will help to put Thanksgiving meals on the tables of needy families for the coming holiday.

A Time for Gratitude

Although they are grateful for God's blessings all throughout the year, our Sisters join the rest of our nation in taking special account of their blessings as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches. Whether your celebration is grand or modest, you break bread alone or with family, what are you particularly thankful for this year? Here, some of our Sisters share the sources of their gratitude.

Thanksgiving also is a time to offer our gratitude to all of YOU — our families, friends, alumnae and benefactors — who walk beside us in our ongoing journey of faith and service. Thank you for the kindness and generosity you show us all throughout the year. We count YOU among our many blessings and always include you in our prayers.

The Meaning of Christmas

Advent and Christmas are such beautiful times in the year. We rejoice in the awareness of the Birth of Christ. Our homes are aglow, and words of joy and peace surround us in song. We miss the people who have gone before us, and we are grateful for our loved ones who are still in our midst. Our hearts are filled with warmth and delight. But have we pondered the true message of Christmas?

Sister M. Virginelle Makos welcomes us to explore this often-lost message during the next Simply Prayer gathering at St. Francis Center for Renewal in Bethlehem, Pa. The program is set for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 6. Participate in person or from anywhere via Zoom.

Random Acts of Kindness

In the Cards

At the end of third-grade art class one Wednesday, the students lined up by the door ready to leave. As I turned the corner, a set of name cards fell off the chalk ledge and spread in all directions. As soon as I realized it, I turned around and, before I could take a step, one of the little third-grade boys darted over, picked up all the cards and put them back on the chalk ledge. As he passed me to get back in line, I stopped him and said, “Thank you, Logan, that was so kind of you.” He smiled and said, ”You shouldn’t have to bend over to pick them up.” A small act, but oh so memorable!

A Perfect Fit

I went to Bethlehem, Pa., to attend Sister Amata Shina’s funeral this fall. It was so nice to be together with the Sisters for the weekend. It was almost time for the funeral and, when I went to dress, I discovered that I had forgotten to pack my skirt! I went into the community room and expressed my dilemma. To my unexpected surprise, Sister Virginelle said, “I have an extra skirt If it fits.” It fit me perfectly, and I attended Sister Amata’s funeral in a beautiful “new-to-me” skirt!
