Wishmaking Monthly

You Gotta Run Before You Walk

Leave your mark on our Make-A-Wish Northeast New York Walk For Wishes on the Wishing Way!

Celebrate a wish child who inspires you or honor the memory of a special wish child with a sign along our Wishing Way – a signature section of our Walk route! Your donation of $100 means a personalized sign will be placed on the Wishing Way during our Walk For Wishes on Aug. 13! Go here to make your donation or order your sign today!

For questions, email walk@neny.wish.org. Already made your $100 donation? Just fill out this form and let us know!)

The Walk For Wishes Only Works with YOU There! One August morning will make a difference in the lives of more than a dozen local wish kids and their families – especially if YOU help. When you register and form your team, you're helping others learn about the power of a wish through your participation, advocacy and willingness to share WHY you walk. When you fundraise, every dollar that is donated is going directly toward granting the wishes of local kids. That’s the power that YOU have!

It's Free ... and You Get Stuff! Registration for the walk is FREE! And raising just $100 will get you the coveted 2022 Walk T-shirt. That’s asking five friends for $20 (or 20 friends for $5, but that seems like an aggressive amount of social interaction).

The point is – you can DO this, especially when doing so means that local kids will receive the hope that comes from a wish come true.

Let’s Create Hope … every step of the way.

Last Call for Wish Family Picnic at The Joe

The Wish Family Picnic is back, returning to The Joe this Sunday, and we would love to see ALL our wish families there.

Join us at the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy for the picnic, then stick around as our friends the Tri-City Valley Cats take on the Gateway Grizzlies. Wish families are invited at no charge. (A wish family includes wish child/alum, two adults and siblings under the age of 18.) Tickets for additional guests are $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under, and include the picnic and the game!

The gates open at 3 p.m., there will be a children's book reading on the field at 3:30 p.m. and the picnic will begin at 4 p.m. To reserve a spot, email neny@neny.wish.org with the wish child's name and number of people coming. Please put Wish Family Picnic in the subject line. Reservations are required; please RSVP by tomorrow. If you have questions or would like to purchase additional tickets, please call the office directly at 518-456-9474.

See you at The Joe on Sunday!

Wyatt Goes to Work

Wyatt’s Make-A-Wish Northeast New York wish experience included the dream of many an 8-year-old — and that part wasn’t even his wish!

Wyatt wished for a game room makeover. But in order to install it as a surprise, his parents Mark and Madison had to get him out of the house.

So Wyatt’s dad brought the 8-year-old to a Slingerlands site being worked by BBL Construction Services. Workers there had previously befriended the boy with gifts, but Wyatt was stunned when he was not only given a tour of the heavy equipment on site, but invited to take some for a (supervised) spin!

Famulare Named Development Manager

Karla Famulare has been named development manager of Make-A-Wish Northeast New York. She replaces Jen Cullen, who left earlier this year.

Most recently, Famulare was employer relations office coordinator at Union College. She has also been very active in the nonprofit sector, serving many years as a board member and gala and auction chair at the Joan Nicole Prince Home in Scotia, and chair of the annual gala and auction of Community Hospice of Schenectady.

"I am thrilled to be joining Make-A-Wish and become part of its mission of creating wishes for children battling critical illnesses," the Siena College graduate said. "To have a job that is so impactful is meaningful beyond words, and I can't wait to get started!"

The Missing Ingredient in a Wish is a Referral

It takes the right ingredients to make a great wish. And the most important one is a referral.

Do you know of a child like Roark who may be eligible for a wish? If so, click on the link below, or contact Manager of Medical Referral Outreach Margaret Richards at mrichards@neny.wish.org or 518-456-9474.

A One-of-a-Kind Wish

Attention, numerologists: James’ recent wish to go to Hawaii and see the sights surrounding Pearl Harbor will always have a significant place in Make-A-Wish Northeast New York history – at least if you are a fan of numbers and/or symmetry:

James’ wish is the 2,022nd wish granted in chapter history – the only time a wish number has matched the calendar year it was granted. Never happened before, and it will never happen again.

Naked Turtle Holds 25th annual golf tournament

Thank you to all who organized and came out to the 25th annual Naked Turtle Golf Tournament in Plattsburgh to benefit Make-A-Wish Northeast New York. The generosity of our North Country supporters never wavers, and we are grateful.

A Chapter in (Seamless) Transition

After attending Sunday’s Wish Jump fundraiser (sadly, I could not jump this year), and traveling north Wednesday for the 25th annual Naked Turtle Golf Tournament to benefit Make-A-Wish Northeast New York, I could not help but be struck by the familiar faces who year after year donate their time and treasure to the chapter’s efforts.

People like Mary Kenney with Wish Jump, and the Carpenters and Spiegels in Plattsburgh. (A special thanks also goes out to Diane Duquette Burl for all she does in the North Country, from fundraising to wish granting.) There are so many more we can count on every year.

That said, we are a chapter in transition. This week, Karla Famulare started as our new development manager. As you know, I will be stepping down as chief executive officer when a replacement is hired (but plan to remain involved), and there will be other changes. Yes, transition is the right word.

But it will a seamless transition. While there are new faces coming to Make-A-Wish, many others who are already devoting so much toward creating life-changing wishes for children battling critical illnesses will remain on board to greet them.

What cannot change, what will not change, is our steadfast commitment to our mission, and our vision: Granting the wish of every eligible child in the 15 counties we serve. Our professional staff and dedicated cadre of volunteers will always remain singularly focused on that goal.

Yes, things are changing here. But in the most important ways, they are staying the same.

With immense gratitude,

Bill Trigg
