President's Message - April 2022

Hello Denise,

It’s SPRING!!!!

Yes, our weather is unusual but the flowers in Shipley Nature Center tell us spring is, indeed, here.  We are emerging from our pandemic schedule and have the following news for 2022.

  • A stalwart team of volunteers have kept the 18 acres clear and safe for visitors.
  • We have established open hours from 9 am – 1 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • We have created a way to schedule private tours at a per person charge.  The tours may be scheduled according to the number of volunteers we have available.
  • Inside the Outdoors, the exciting program that brings elementary school children and their teachers and parents, to Shipley is returning after a creative time of virtual teaching during the pandemic.  We are delighted with this educational program which teaches about the life style of the indigenous peoples who used this seasonal location.
  • The groundskeepers have curated the habitat to maintain its native design.  The pathways are safe and delightful to walk.
  • The Great Egrets are back!!!  Come to see the nesting which occurs annually on the west side of the Center.
  • We are celebrating Rachael Carson during the month of May in honor of Earth Day - which we know is everyday! The collaboration includes the Library, Secret Garden, Urban Forest and Shipley.  A wonderful example of all that may be accomplished with communication and commitment.  Schedule of Activities - May in Central Park
  • We are collaborating with the City Library for poetry walks in Shipley and at the east side of Central Park at the Library.  This is a creative way to enjoy nature and to share the stories of nature.
  • The Compost Seminars, a collaboration with the City Public Works Department, are back!  The May and September classes are full. There are only 14 seats left for the October class.  If you are interested to attend, Register October 15 - Now!
  • Watch for the advertising of Cool Summer Nights this August.  We are currently scheduling  events for this popular summer event.

Many have asked about the currently closed pathway on the east side of Blackbird Pond.  The City and Shipley have collaborated on a State and Federal grant to reroute the pathway.  The grant has been submitted and we look forward to the next step.  We are working to open the area as soon as it is safe, meanwhile there is much to see in the Center.

Volunteers are vital to the program at Shipley.  As more are able to volunteer, we will provide training and schedule more open hours.  Please see our web site for further Volunteer Information.

Happy Spring!
