The overall focus is on meeting people wherever they are in their journey, and inviting them deeper through an experience of faith with others—most especially in their families, homes and faith communities. Event includes lunch. Please register at https://forms.gle/k99A1dyYU9LuRM899. If you have any questions, please contact Catholic Education Ministries at (320) 251-0111.

Fr. Tom Knoblach ♦ Vicar for Health Care Ethics

As you may have seen, the Committee on Doctrine of the USCCB recently issued a brief instruction entitled “On the Proper Disposition of Bodily Remains.” It can be found at https://www.usccb.org/resources/On%20Proper%20Disposition%202023-03-20.pdf

The document reminds the faithful that cremated remains are to be interred in a sacred place and not kept indefinitely at home, scattered on land or sea, divided and used in jewelry, tattoos, or other personal items.

In addition, two more recent methods are reviewed from the perspective of due reverence for the human body: alkaline hydrolysis (dissolving the body chemically in about 100 gallons of liquid that breaks down the tissues quickly) and human composting (using organic means to foster microbes that consume the body’s tissues and reduce it to soil). Because neither of these methods results in identifiable human remains that can then be interred, the Church judges that both of these methods fail as acceptable means of respect due to the human body. Those responsible for cemetery policies may wish to review and update their policies and public information. You may also wish to communicate this to your local funeral directors for their awareness.

The same Committee on Doctrine also issued a Doctrinal Note “On the Moral Limits to Technological Manipulation of the Human Body.” (See https://www.usccb.org/resources/Doctrinal%20Note%202023-03-20.pdf). While addressed primarily to Catholic health care institutions, this is an issue that affects many aspects of our contemporary life: in addition to health care, also education, athletics, families, friendships. Many of the faithful struggle to know how to interpret these developments, especially when gender issues impact their children, grandchildren, siblings, or others close to them. A prayerful and theological reading of the document is recommended for its own teaching and the other Magisterial and scientific references it contains.

You may also benefit from reading the recent statement of the Nordic Bishops’ Conference on the same topic. (See https://www.nordicbishopsconference.org/fileadmin/NBK/pdffiler/Hirtenbriefe/Menschliche_Sexualitaet_2023/NBK_Pastoral_Letter_Lent_2023_EN.pdf). Though more succinct, it is also an insightful analysis of the burdens people carry and the hope we find in God’s wisdom and mercy.

NOTES FROM THE DIOCESAN OFFICES

David Fremo ♦ (320) 251-0111

Celebrate Catholic Schools:

It has been an exciting year for our Catholic schools! We welcomed more than 100 new preschool students in the fall, opened the doors on a new school (Perham), made new friends across the state with Catholic Schools Center of Excellence (CSCOE), ordained a new bishop, shoveled record-breaking snowfall and will soon say goodbye to our graduates and hello to the long days of summer. God is good!

We celebrate our principals who will be moving on from many years of love and learning in our schools, too. We give thanks to God for Jodi Vanderheiden (Little Falls), Christine Friederichs (Foley) and Lynn Rasmussen (Luxemburg)! We pray for you in your last days of the 2022-2023 school year, and in your next adventures!

June 25 – Emmaus Institute – Nineteen people from across the Diocese of Saint Cloud as well as two people from the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis are preparing to finish their fourth and final year of Emmaus Institute. They will be receiving a certificate in pastoral ministry from the Diocese of Saint Cloud at a Mass at which Bishop Patrick Neary will preside at 1:00 p.m. at Saint John's Abbey Church. All are welcome to join in this celebration! Contact Kristi Bivens for more information at (320) 258-7642 or [email protected]. For more information about Emmaus Institute, visit www.stcdio.org/Emmaus-Institute.

DYC Applications being accepted – The Diocesan Youth Council (DYC) is made up of youth in grades 9-12 from a variety of parishes from across the diocese. These youth meet 5-6 times annually. The DYC helps plan and assist in the implementation of diocesan sponsored youth ministry events. This is primarily, but not exclusively, related to the Diocesan SH Youth Rally, Middle School Youth Rally/Lock-in and Castaway. Please visit https://stcdio.org/cem/faith-formation/leadershiptraining/ to download DYC applications and invite your high school youth to consider serving on the DYC. Feel free to contact Kent Schmitz with any questions at: (320) 251-0111 x4 or [email protected].

Virtual Class

Are you a nurse (or do you know a nurse) who has been feeling a little burnt out and would like to incorporate more of their spirituality to their nursing practice? Encourage them to consider Faith Community Nursing.

A Faith Community Nurse (FCN) can do so much for a church family, creating an atmosphere of wellness and vibrancy while focusing on the intentional care of the spirit and whole-person health from a faith perspective. Some examples of how FCNs may achieve this is through:

  • Home and hospital visits and calls,
  • Educational offerings to church members and/or the wider community,
  • Connection to community resources,
  • Care group facilitation,
  • Baby blankets and prayer shawl ministry,
  • Mental health care,
  • Blood pressure screenings,
  • Parenting classes,
  • Support of clergy and ministry leaders,
  • Evidence-based wellness workshops,
  • Volunteer coordination,
  • Much much more.

Scholarships are available. Early bird and group discounts are also available!

The work of the Tribunal has continued throughout these months – but with the inability to meet in person with clients we have made several adjustments to meet the needs of the people. In this process the staff has chosen to make some adjustments to the annulment process.

The adjustments are as follows:

  • The documents required are the same for each annulment process and are:
  1. baptismal certificates for both principals;
  2. marriage certificate
  3. divorce decree

  • For the formal annulment process, the petitioner can submit the completed form (Formal Petition (PDF) or Formal Petition (DOC)) and a narrative –or– participate in a telephone interview –or– appear in person at the Tribunal Office for a scheduled appointment.

  • In the formal process, hearing the witnesses will not have to be in person at the Tribunal. The witnesses will be contacted by phone and the petitioner will assure the availability of the witnesses for a phone interview at a time designated by the Tribunal.

If you are uncertain about the annulment process or any have other questions, you can contact the Tribunal Office at (320) 251-6557 or email [email protected][email protected][email protected] or [email protected].

May 13 – Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive – For the 31st year, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) is excited to hold the traditional Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 13.

In St. Cloud, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive supports both Catholic Charities Emergency Services Food Shelf and Salvation Army Food Shelf. Bernick’s and Short Stop are the business sponsors for the area food drive.

For more than a decade, this nationwide drive has annually collected more than 70 million pounds of food. Over the course of its history, the food drive has collected 1.4 billion pounds of food to help feed our neighbors.

Hunger exists in every community in our country. Today, 1 in 5 families in the United States experiences food insecurity and relies on food donations. Here in our state, a record-breaking 5.5 million visits were made to Minnesota food shelves in 2022.

Participating is easy. Simply leave a bag of nonperishable food next to your mailbox on May 13, and your letter carrier will handle the rest. All donated food in the St. Cloud area stays within the community and helps Catholic Charities and Salvation Army food shelves.

Learn more at nalc.org/food-drive.
