ROTC cadet spending summer in Taiwan
Kierigan McEvoy, a junior from St. Charles, Missouri, is using her summer break to improve her language skills at the Mandarin Training Center in Taipei, Taiwan. She says she “wanted to take part in this program to improve my language speaking and listening abilities. Being immersed in Taiwan has done just that and has been such an amazing and enriching experience.” The skills from McEvoy’s program add to her impressive resume; she’s a ROTC Cadet, a member of the Mahurin Honors College, an International Affairs and Chinese double major with a minor in military science.
Psychological Sciences graduate student interns with Dutch suicide prevention center
Caitlin Gregory, a master’s student from Portland, Tennessee, is in her second year in the Psychological Sciences program. Gregory recently returned from a weeklong visit to the University of Groningen in The Netherlands where she was engaged in the on-site portion of her internship with 113 Suicide Prevention, the national Dutch suicide prevention center. Gregory has been working with Dr. Amy Brausch, Professor of Psychological Sciences, in suicide prevention research for over four years. During this experience in The Netherlands, Gregory expanded her understanding of the warning signs of suicidal behaviors and thoughts, which will allow her to make an even greater contribution to research in the field.
CLIMBING HIGHER
Last week at a symposium for the world's longest caves in Cancún, Mexico, WKU graduate student Meghan Raines gave her first professional presentation on the ongoing water quality research at Mammoth Cave. Researchers from WKU, Mammoth Cave and the Cave Research Foundation are in Mexico on a research exchange with scientists, explorers and officials associated with the Great Mayan Aquifer. Learn More
Spotlight: Kirker Butler
WKU Theatre & Dance alumnus Kirker Butler is a co-executive producer of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, which was nominated for 17 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series. Season 2’s fourth episode featured an original song written by him and Steve Martin.
PCAL marks passing of faculty member Dr. Roger Murphy
Dr. Roger Murphy, associate professor in the Department of Political Science, died July 4, 2022. He was 56. Dr. Murphy attended Manchester University in England to pursue a bachelor’s degree in American Studies. He continued his studies at Indiana University, where he earned his Ph.D. in Political Science. For over two decades, Dr. Murphy taught in the Department of Political Science at WKU. While he enjoyed teaching courses in International Politics, Politics of Western, Central, and Eastern Europe, U.S. Foreign Policy, American Studies, and War & Peace, he loved leading study abroad trips.

4 incoming freshmen join Alumni Leadership Scholars program
Four incoming freshmen were each awarded a four-year renewable scholarship totaling $8,000, $2,000 per year, as part of the WKU Alumni Association’s Alumni Leadership Scholars program.

Student making a difference

Hardin Planetarium Schedule
Hardin Planetarium will present MoonBeings at 7 p.m. Tuesday, 7 p.m. Thursday and 2 p.m. Sunday through July 31. Lives of the Stars will be presented Aug. 2 through Sept. 1. Admission is free.
CHHS 20th Anniversary
The College of Health and Human Services is celebrating its 20th anniversary this fall and is planning a dinner at 6 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Eva and Jim Martens Alumni Center. CHHS Alumni Achievement Awards will be presented at the event; deadline for nominations is Aug. 15.
