Women U-Night, DART & More!

Being a community leader doesn't mean you have to be an elected official - it means you are willing to work for and speak up for your community. In the struggle with DART about the design and construction of the Cotton Belt / Silver Line, we have entered a very important time. Join us for the community meeting on Thursday at 6:30 pm to stay up to date on this project and how it will affect you. More information below.

This month is Women's History Month and Women's International Day is tomorrow (Tuesday). Let's celebrate at the Women U-Night event in the Arts District downtown. It's a free event and it will be fabulous. All are invited and welcome. (it's not too late to register and come on down!)

The D12 office is hearing more frequently from residents saying cars are whizzing by at speeds that are far in excess of the speed limit. These fast speeds are putting everybody in danger. Please slow down.

Take care, Cara

We are not expecting to record the meeting, but we'll work on some short videos that capture the questions most residents have. This meeting is for you - so you can know what is happening and can get honest answers. City of Dallas staff will present the design that DART has submitted to them, we'll go over the challenges in the design, construction, and big problems for the community. I'll share with you how I think you can make your voice heard effectively. DART has not been invited to speak, but I'm sure they will attend and report back about the level of attendance, presentation, and questions asked. Media will be present.

UPCOMING DISTRICT 12 MEETINGS
Townhall Meetings - These meetings are for you and focus on District 12 and city issues. Usually there is a short update from city hall, a guest speaker for about 10 minutes, and time for you to ask questions and give input.

Budget Townhall Meetings - Come give your input BEFORE the budget is developed. Two meetings are scheduled for you to share your priorities and suggestions for improvement. This is your chance to comment on the tax rate, street maintenance budget, allocation for homeless encampment clean ups, etc... An assistant city manager will lead the presentation and be available to answer questions.

Congrats to DPD Academy Class #378!
Congrats to our newest DPD officers on graduating from the Dallas Police Academy. The North Central Patrol station gained three more officers! Welcome!
Tragedy in District 12
In the last month, District 12 has had two very big fires. One demolished a single family home, and the other an apartment building with 16 units. Luckily, all the people and pets made it out safely. Thank you to the Red Cross of Denton County that was able to help all the families in the apartments get into hotel rooms and resettled.

We also had a horrific dog mauling of a 5-year old boy, Kavaughn. Actually, it was his 5th birthday, and this adorable photo was taken at school, just hours before the attack. He was walking home with siblings and cousins and the dog attacked him without provocation. The dog has been euthanized and the owner arrested. Kavaughn has had several surgeries and remains hospitalized. The young family has three other children and this has been a huge trauma for all of them. It is expected that it will take years for him to fully recover. I was able to sit with his mom for a couple of hours at the hospital on the day of the attack and bring dinner to their apartment one evening. If you, your faith group, civic organization or other group is interested in helping them (meals, gift cards, donations), any help you can provide is very needed. Here is the story from the news and the Go Fund Me link. Also, please contact our office if you would like to help them and we will connect you. https://gofund.me/906d4b3a
Volunteer Appreciation Event for Chaverim of Dallas
Many thanks to the volunteers of Chaverim of Dallas who have been assisting community members with urgent needs. So happy to provide you with a Special Recognition by Mayor Johnson. Great work!
City Council Redistricting
If you would like to give input to the Redistricting Commission about areas that you believe should be considered "communities of interest," they are working on the maps that will define the boundaries for city council in the coming decade. A community of interest could mean your HOA or neighborhood association, your school attendance boundary, your county, an area where there is a minority concentration, or any other factor that you think makes keeping your area and another area together in being represented. You can tell them these things by email or sign up to speak at one of their meetings. A list of all the emails of commissioners is listed below.

You could also draw a map for them, or review potential maps submitted. For additional information or to submit a map, please go to
www.DallasRedistricting.com or call 214-671-6197.

If you wish to send an email to the commissioners, you can cut and paste these email addresses: jesse.oliver@dallascityhall.com,

Crime in Dallas & District 12
There has been an uptick in crimes related to vehicles. Most often, the vehicles are left unlocked and items inside are taken. Please help us reduce crime by:
  1. Please lock your car, even if you will only be away for a few minutes.
  2. Please remove items from your car or place them in your trunk.
  3. Please report to 911 if you see people checking car door handles to determine if they are locked/unlocked or if there is a crime involving your vehicle.

The majority of crime in District 12 happens at apartments. The public safety committee has asked DPD to address how to lower crime in these areas and will be briefed tomorrow (Tuesday). If you see or experience crime, please report it asap by calling 911. The number of calls affects how DPD staffs and patrols the area. By not calling, you may be reducing the number of police on shift in our area.
Dallas Furniture Bank
The Dallas Furniture Bank has some fantastic leaders! They've been doing important work in the community for many years, but it was terrific to hear all the new ways they are currently serving. There is an emphasis on new partnerships and new program to make sure kids have a bed. If you know of an agency serving families that needs mattresses for kids, please contact them to make a connection.
