Critter Chronicles

Join Us In Celebrating July 2023 Heart Connections!

July was a super month for the homeless pets of our community: A total of 94 pets were adopted, and 55 pets were transferred through our Highway to Home program. Thank you to all of the adopters who chose to welcome a (now formerly) homeless pet into their heart and home!

Would you like to welcome a pet into your heart and home? If so, come to GMHS Tuesday- Sunday from 12-5 PM to visit the homeless pets just waiting to meet their match.

July 2023 Shelter Snapshot

The generous support of staff, volunteers, and donors enables GMHS to provide daily care, cover special medical needs, foster animals in homes as needed, and arrange transportation to adoption-guaranteed partners. We are also committed to education, outreach, and transparency. Our annual statistics are available on our website, and we also offer you a monthly snapshot.

Want to join our life-saving team?! We are hiring for Animal Care Specialists!

Candidates should be comfortable around dogs and cats, have a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays, and be able to lift 50 lbs.

Stop by GMHS Tuesday-Sunday from 12-5 PM to apply!

Mark Your Calendars

Arts on Main is partnering with GMHS to help raise money and awareness for our summer fundraiser, Dog Days of Summer. First Friday will be held at Arts on Main on Friday, August 4th from 6-8 PM. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. Adoptable dogs from the shelter will be at the event and we will also have paintings made by our shelter pets that will be available for purchase by donation.

We have a purr-fect family activity for you Sunday, August 13!

Join us in our GMHS Lobby, where we invite you to assemble and paint fish bone wind chimes. We will provide all necessary supplies, and registration is not required. All ages are welcome.

Just drop in anytime between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, on August 13. Email with questions and for more details.

Foster Volunteers Needed

Sandy was surrendered to GMHS in August of last year when her owner had to move. At eighteen years old, the shelter environment wasn't the best place for this lovely senior cat, so she was placed in a foster home. The first picture is from her first day in foster and the second picture is of Sandy today.

A loving foster family can make such a difference for our shelter pets! If you'd like to join our life-saving foster team, please email or click here to fill out your foster application. All supplies are provided and any amount of time that you can volunteer is helping an animal and us!

Every day at GMHS, homeless pets live because you give. Saving lives is expensive, and there is no shortage of pets in need of our care. Each gift made—tax-deductible, of course—has life-saving power, and we appreciate your commitment to saving and transforming the lives of homeless pets. Donations can be made here or by mail at P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, VA 23061. With an eight percent administrative rate, 92 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to providing shelter and care for homeless pets.

GMHS is neither affiliated with any national animal welfare organizations nor do we receive funding from the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States.

Shelter Pet Spotlight - Millie

Millie has been patiently waiting more than 700 days to make a heart connection.

This sweet gal loves long walks on the beach and through the park. With each step, her energetic spirit shines through as she eagerly explores her surroundings, sniffing out every new scent that tickles her little nose. The sound of crashing waves and the feeling of sand between her paws brings her pure joy!

Could your active family be the one for her? Let's find out!
