What’s Happening Here? An Important Update on Our Fuller-Pursell Preserve

As you walk around the Fuller-Pursell Preserve, you’ll notice many trees that we recently cut down. What did we do, why did we do it, and what happens now?

The forest at Fuller-Pursell contained 3000 or more dead ash trees – victims of the emerald ash borer, an invasive insect that has killed tens of millions of trees across the Eastern United States. Read more...

Amphibian Crossing Program -

Call for Volunteers

Heritage Conservancy is looking for motivated volunteers to help with our Amphibian Crossing Program this spring.

As temperatures start to warm and the ground starts to thaw, amphibians wake up from their winter hibernation and begin to migrate to their breeding grounds. However, some of their routes cross through roads, leading to unfortunate casualties. Luckily, Heritage Conservancy volunteers are there to lend a helping hand.

During particular evening rainstorms in early spring, volunteers take to the streets to help cross these vulnerable critters while tallying the individuals of each species. Our amazing volunteers help cross hundreds of amphibians each season that may not have made it to their breeding grounds safely.

If you are interested in becoming an amphibian crossing volunteer, please contact Tyler Kovacs at tkovacs@heritageconservancy.org.

New Welcome Sign Installed at

Croydon Woods Nature Preserve

Madison Vengoechea (left) and Heritage Conservancy staff (right).

Last year we began the process of creating and installing a new welcome sign at Croydon Woods Nature Preserve. The sign is positioned at the front of the entrance to the woods, right next to Keystone Elementary School.

As a nod to the local elementary school and the educational programs we host with them at Croydon, the artwork was the finalist in a series of submissions from the fourth and fifth graders at Keystone Elementary School. The students created the illustrations last year for the competition to design the sign, and Heritage Conservancy staff members voted on the designs after receiving 50 student submissions. Madison Vengoechea was declared the winner.

“The vibrant colors and connection of people enjoying the woods really made her artwork stand out!” said our Community Engagement Programs Manager, Shannon Fredebaugh-Siller. “The outdoor seating area really needed something to help the space feel like a space to bring the community together, and I think Madison’s sign will do just that! We hope that the outdoor classroom/seating area will be enjoyed by the school and everyone in the community, whether they are looking to sit and enjoy nature, watch birds, or go for a hike on the trails in Croydon Woods Nature Preserve.”

Testimonial

"'The purpose of conservation: The greatest good to the greatest number of people for the longest time.'

Gifford Pinchot, founder of the conservation movement and former Pennsylvania Governor.

The cutting and replanting of trees at the Jere Knight trail embodies this quote. While in the short term the trail may look like it is in some disorder, the miracle of nature is that, over time, it creates order out of that disorder. Thank you to Heritage Conservancy for ensuring this beautiful trail for us, our children, our grandchildren, and future generations."
