From the President

The season of longer days and family vacations is finally here. It is also the time of the traditional July 1st start of residency training, and many of us are about to orient a new class of family medicine trainees. This year we are also starting to look ahead to the implementation of new ACGME Family Medicine Program requirements for the summer of 2023. It was just announced that the details of these new requirements won’t be released until September, but the FMEC is here to help you start preparing now with a focus on the big picture concepts of panel management and community engagement and regional collaboration. We are planning a preconference at our Annual Meeting to bring programs together and provide a structured approach to incorporating the new requirements.

Also, later this summer we will be to moving on to phase 2 of our recent programming on the social determinants of health (see update below). We plan to bring residents and faculty from different programs together to meet experts and share ideas on nutrition security, parks as community wellness hubs, and the digital divide. Watch for more information soon, but if you know you are interested in participating, contact me or Scott Allen ([email protected]).

Finally, it is time for your residency program to sign-up to present a virtual “Hot Topic” session, which will be held before and after the FMEC Annual Meeting. The “Hot Topics” sessions have become a popular way to engage and interact with medical students around a focused area of interest (see info below). Annual Meeting registration for individuals and the Residency Fair is now open, and we are accepting applications for student scholarships. We look forward to seeing you all September 16-18 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City!

June is a busy month of months

June is National Safety Month, Pride Month, and Men’s Health Month, and there are countless other health-related celebrations and observances during the month of June. How did your hospital or residency program celebrate or educate the community on these issues, and how do you plan to promote the many health observances planned for July and August? These include Cord Blood Awareness Month, International Group B Strep Throat Awareness Month, and Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month (July) and National Breastfeeding Month, National Immunization Awareness Month, and Psoriasis Action Month (August). Let the FMEC know by emailing [email protected] and we may highlight it in our next newsletters.

FMEC Project Updates

Promote your residency through FMEC’s 2022 Hot Topics in Family Medicine

For the third consecutive year, the FMEC will offer Hot Topics in Family Medicine. Hot Topics in Family Medicine gives the family medicine residencies who sign up a virtual spotlight, promoted by the FMEC throughout the region. Medical students love it because they can get up close and personal with the faculty and residents from a program they want to check out. Program directors love it because they can communicate with a group of students all at once, virtually. Programs share aspects of their program that are especially strong or unique (i.e. delivering babies, procedures, wilderness medicine, corrections medicine, etc.). In 2022, these one-hour online meetings will be held in two cycles (August 2 through September 8, and September 20 through October 27) on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings at 6 pm and 8 pm ET. Sign up for the day/time that works best for your faculty. Each program may reserve 1-2 sessions. Fees are $300 per session for residency programs participating in the 2022 Residency Fair at the FMEC Annual Meeting, and $600 for programs which are not participating in the 2022 Residency Fair. Visit 2022 Hot Topics for more information, or click here to register today!

Innovator’s Network summaries available now

Since 2008, the FMEC has hosted the Innovator’s Network during its Annual Meeting to provide a medium for groups to showcase innovations in family medicine and primary care. Faculty, residents and others who attend become inspired to try out new approaches in their teaching and practice. Medical students and young physicians become energized about family medicine when exposed to thought leaders and cutting-edge practices. The session also provides a place for employers, union leaders, hospital administrators, investors and others looking to improve care delivery and reduce costs to learn about innovations. Registration is open for the 2022 Innovator’s Network, to be held on September 16, 2022. The FMEC also posted summaries of the 11 presentations from the October 2021 Innovator’s Network, which featured discussions about community-owned health plans, integrative health, dementia, risk stratification, primary care and affordable housing, culturally-appropriate counseling for weight loss, and more. Visit the FMEC’s Innovator’s Network website to read the summaries.

News from the Field

Using storytelling in training and practice

Demonstrating empathy and understanding is key to getting patients to speak up, adopt positive behaviors, and stay engaged. Sometimes the best way providers can make patients feel understood is by sharing personal stories that speak directly to their concerns. Explore a new video series that contains stories to help with conversations about hereditary cancer. Women from diverse backgrounds share their moving experiences navigating family conversations, undergoing genetic testing, or considering preventive options. Watch and share at bit.ly/bringyourbrave

Erika was only 28 years old when she learned she had a BRCA gene mutation that raised her risk for breast cancer. Facing your breast cancer risk when you are young and single can be isolating. Here’s her story.

Promoting Integrative Health

On May 20, 2022, Drs. Wayne Jonas and Bryant Adibe published a commentary entitled “An Integrated Framework for Achieving National Health Goals” in JAMA Health Forum. In the commentary, they introduce a new model of healthcare delivery designed to address the causes of our nation’s declining health and wellbeing. The model reframes the focus and describes the operational processes needed for promoting health and lowering costs in the health-care system. It balances the current disease-focused approach with one that is person-centered, relationship-based, and recovery-focused.

The FMEC thanks the Samueli Foundation for its support of the FMEC Integrative Health Learning Community and looks forward to continuing to educate residents, faculty and other providers about Integrative Health. For more information on FMEC’s project, read the case studies, white paper and more posted on the FMEC website. Is your residency program interested in participating in the FMEC’s next Integrative Health Collaborative? Please contact Scott Allen at [email protected].
