DAY TWELVE:

POVERTY, RACIAL & HEALTH DISPARITIES

"Both class and race survive education, and neither should. What is education then? If it doesn't help a human being to recognize that humanity is humanity, what is it for? So you can make a bigger salary than other people?"

-- Beah Richards

United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region fights for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in our community. It is our responsibility to amplify voices of color and bring awareness to the challenges faced by historically marginalized communities.

May 17 marks the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. However, United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region recognizes that every day should be a time to raise the visibility of transgender individuals in America and to address common issues. Transgender individuals experience higher rates of mental health problems than non-transgender people. Not only that, but transgender people often lack resources around treatment in their communities. Untreated mental health disorders can lead to more serious problems, including substance abuse and increased rates of suicide. If you or anyone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis and need to chat with a qualified LGBTQIA+ crisis responder, partners at THRIVE Lifeline are here for you: Text 'oSTEM' to +1 (313) 662-8209 anytime, from anywhere. Or, 'Trans Lifeline', a 24/7 hotline available in the U.S. and Canada staffed by transgender people for transgender people. Trans Lifeline is primarily for transgender people in a crisis, from struggling with gender identity to thoughts of self-harm: 1-877-565-8860, Available 24/7.

United Way is committed to equity, inclusion, and anti-racist principles and continues to work towards preventing further isolation and mental health barriers.

The 21-Day Equity Challenge is sponsored by Corporation for National and Community Service .
