Land Acknowledgement to take place on
Thanksgiving Sunday
As a covenantal people who gather in the love of truth and the spirit of Jesus Christ, we are called to remembrance and conversion. We are called to a practice of history that seeks the truth about our past—that examines the stories we’ve told about that past and confronts those difficult truths that often go unspoken. This year at Morning Prayer on Thanksgiving Sunday, we will speak one of those truths in honoring the Indigenous Peoples on whose land we gather. Remembering the covenants of the past so often broken, we rededicate ourselves to the work of repair.
Upcoming Parish Events
November Environmental Action Initiative Open Meeting
Monday, November 22 at 5:30 PM

Join us this coming Monday evening on Zoom for the last EAI open meeting of the year. After learning about issues connected with natural gas and the energy transition in Massachusetts through talks by Dorie Seavey and Betsy Peterson, we will now focus on action steps. Items include how to support the Future of Heat Act, now in committee, through the advocacy of our local Mothers Out Front chapter; how to register your opposition to new gas infrastructure being hastily planned such as the Peabody peaker plant; and a campaign to petition Governor Baker being coordinated by our own Bill Wilson.  Roll up your sleeves and help put our faith into action!  If time permits, we'll also have a conversation about steps people are taking in their own homes and lives.

Advent is Coming Up!
The season of Advent begins on Sunday, November 28. We hope that you will join King’s Chapel during this time of reflection and preparation.
Mark your calendars! Below are just a few Advent virtual and in person events that will take place.
Advent Book Group – Mary Oliver’s Poems | Mondays in Advent 5-6 PM by Zoom (beginning November 29)

Poet Mary Oliver wrote: “To pay attention, this is our endless and proper work.” During Advent, how will you wait for the arrival of Jesus at Christmas? Our Advent devotional this year says “Poetry can help us as we wait.” As Mary Oliver often emphasized, the best poems help us notice and feel things we might otherwise miss, both the depths of despair and the heights of hope.” For the four weeks of Advent, gather with our clergy at the beginning of each week, to read poetry by Mary Oliver and related scripture, and to choose for yourself among the daily practices that can deepen your Advent journey. Using Advent to slow down and notice small things may also ready us to see a small child born at Christmas in a new light.

For our congregation, the booklet and publicly available links to the poems are available here and will also be emailed to you in an upcoming special Advent newsletter. The Zoom registration link is available here. Come all four weeks, or one, as you’re able.
Volunteers Needed! Chapel Greening on Saturday, December 4

Come join the holiday spirit while greening the Chapel. We will start at 10:15 AM on Saturday, December 4. The end time depends on when we are finished! There are many garlands and wreaths to hang. We especially need someone who feels confident climbing a tall ladder to hang one of the wreaths. We look forward to having fun together.

Advent Crafts on Sunday, December 5

All are invited to join us for Advent Crafts on Sunday, December 5, from 10am to 1pm. Join our Church School children in the Parish House for Advent Wreath making, Christmas ornament making, cookie decoration, and Christmas card making.

All are welcome after the Morning Light service, before Morning Prayer, or after Morning Prayer. We look forward to being able to gather in person for this King’s Chapel tradition as we prepare for Christmas!
Mini Milk Punch on Sunday, December 19! at the Chapel after Morning Prayer
We’ll gather to toast each other with holiday punches—indoors. Covid can rule out the feast we’ve enjoyed in the last few years, but it can’t squelch our festivity! We have permission from the Reopening Task Force to offer simple refreshments to celebrate each other and the holidays and a long-standing KC tradition. Hospitality Committee
From the Church School
Advent Sunday School
David Waters will be teaching our Church School children after Morning Light at 10am during the season of Advent. The First and Third Sundays of Advent will be dedicated to our grade-school age children, the Second Sunday will be open to all for Advent Crafts, and the Fourth Sunday of Advent will be dedicated to our younger children. Our Church School families will receive more information soon, and we look forward to gathering during Advent!
Sunday Concert November 28: A Year in Chorales
The next concert in our Sunday series will take place on November 28, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and also the first Sunday of Advent. Heinrich will take you on a journey of the liturgical season in A Year of Chorales, settings of German Lutheran chorales by Bach, Brahms, Homilius, and local composer friends James Woodman and Carson Cooman. Members of our choir will sing the chorales in between the organ versions. Start the new church year off right and join us.

As always, you save $5 on tickets by purchasing in advance online:
From the Memorial Committee
On Sunday evening, November 14, more than sixty KC members and friends tuned into a zoom presentation by members of the KC Memorial Project and the Mass. Design Group. The presentation, “Shaping Our Faith: Next Steps for the KC Memorial Project”, provided an update on the group’s work thus far to acknowledge and memorialize Kings Chapel’s historical connection with enslaved individuals.

The presentation also introduced the Mass Design Group, an architectural firm with national and international experience with justice based design. We asked Mass. Design to partner with us in this presentation both because of their experience in the design of physical and living memorials, and also to give them an opportunity to demonstrate how they might work with us to help us achieve our goals should we engage them as consultants.

Following an excellent and most powerful presentation, time was set aside for questions, reactions, and commentary. As is our policy, we converse within a safe space in which all commentary can be voiced and acknowledged. Audience response covered a wide spectrum of views, thoughts, and reactions. Overall, the response was positive and supportive with a clear message that we should continue to move forward with this work. A recorded version of the presentation is posted to the KC website.

We have traveled far on this journey and we have much further to go. We have come this far by faith, hard work, and with the support of our congregants, friends, and neighbors. We continue to ask for your prayers and continued support as we work to bring life to God’s message of love and compassion.

Environmental Action Initiative Updates
Eleven on the 11th at the 11th hour!
Last Thursday, November 11th, eleven of us passionate and  determined King’s Chapel people gathered to ring our Paul Revere bell, hold signs, and meet and greet passers-by, in order to call attention to the crisis we all face in the warming of our planet.  It truly is the 11th hour, and perhaps even later than that, if you follow the news from Glasgow. So we ring our bell to call for action.

This time our Senior Minister, Joy, tried her hand at the ringing, and was impressed by its weight. Other ringers were Amanda Cigielski (and her 2-year old son Gideon) Stephen Courtney, and Dick Perkins. John Bowman, Carol Genovese, Todd Lee, Cynthia Perkins, Kent Wittenburg, and Sylvia Soderberg also served by holding signs and being enthusiastic, as people stopped by to see what we were up to.

Several of us survived to have lunch at Emmett’s, which has become a jolly part of the experience.

Please consider joining us in this hopeful endeavor on Saturday, December 11th.  We have an encouraging and inspiring time together each month. And if you have contacts in another parish, please pass the word!

Stewardship 2021
Our Stewardship year is coming to an end and we need to be sure that everyone does their part to be sure our beloved King's Chapel has all the funds it needs for the coming year. Our recent letters hopefully reminded you to send in your gift, right away. In this season of giving, let us all remember the gifts we receive every week from King's Chapel and do our part to show our thanks with our gift in return.
