How do we invest in our well-being, and what are the returns to us and to our families? How can we find more joy in living, even though we experience the difficulty of unexpected changes. Some changes are positive and life enhancing, and others are horribly unsettling and painful, like the sudden loss of a loved one, or friend. Our wins and losses inform our own responses to life. The ups and downs can shake us, yet guide and lead us to make new decisions, set new personal goals, and evaluate how we are doing.
A friend of mine used to say, “what can I learn from this?” whenever she experienced an unplanned change. We think of the German phrase, “Man tracht un-Gott lacht” Man plans and Gd laughs. The random nature of events has challenged and perplexed us since the dawn of humanity. We strive for reason and order in our lives, and chaos brings confusion, discomfort and sometimes anger. “Life giveth and taketh.” How can we stand strong?

The weather is sunny and beautiful and I’ve been enjoying walking around the JSL campuses in both West Bloomfield and Oak Park and visiting with residents who are out soaking up the sun. So, it’s really hard to think about fall, but we have so many fun fall (and late summer) activities coming up to ease our transition into winter!
Fall Fashion Fun
On Tuesday, August 29 at Fleischman/Hechtman Residences and Wednesday, August 30 at Meer, at 1pm, our fabulous resident models will be showing off some of the boutique’s fall fashions. Although it may be blistering outside, inside the air conditioning will be perfect for jackets and sweaters in all the season’s great colors. Come for cookies, coffee, and a first crack at shopping the boutique’s fall fashions!
Golda
The Maple Theater has invited us to have a special JSL screening of Golda on Wednesday, September 6 at 2pm. Tickets will be available at the door. They are $8 and include popcorn. Golda, which features Helen Mirren as Golda Meir and Liev Schreiber as Henry Kissinger focuses on the Yom Kippur war. Outnumbered, outgunned, surrounded, isolated, and frustrated by the infighting of her cabinet, Meir races against time to save millions of lives on both sides of the conflict. We hope you’ll join us!
Lives Well Lived
Our annual FRIENDS of Jewish Life fundraiser is focusing on storytelling. Over 40 of our residents are busily crafting stories for a book we will launch at the event on Tuesday, November 14 at 7pm. Mark your calendars for a book signing, refreshments, schmoozing, and an entertaining program of short films showing what some very interesting older adults are up to!
Ritual Committee
While maybe more lovely than fun, we are putting a crew together to enhance the ritual life at JSL. We’re looking for volunteers who would like to do:
- Kabbalat Shabbat
- Havdallah
- Passover Seders
- Megillah readings on Purim
- Shofar blowing
- Sukkot – Sukkah decorating / prayers
For information on the boutiques, fashion shows, movie event, volunteering, or anything else FRIENDS related, please feel free to contact me any time at 248 592-5062 or brobinson@jslmi.org.
Looking forward to seeing you at JSL! –Beth Robinson

A fun, low level impact standing cardio routine that you can do at home. This is a beginner routine but as always, only do movements that you are comfortable with and never force anything that gives you pain or discomfort. There is always room to modify your movements if you find you have limitations and that is perfectly ok! |
Warm Summer Days, Cool Soup Ways: Spiced Gazpacho with Curry Cream
This chilled summer soup is even better using seasoned canned tomatoes than fresh, healthier ones because cooked tomatoes have a higher level of antioxidants and it’s so much easier!
Want it meat-flavored? Just add meat stock to it!

Contact Jacqueline Lupinacci at jlupinacci@jslmi.org with questions. | Meer residents participated in "Speed Dating with Books," conducted by the West Bloomfield Library. This activity gave them an opportunity to 'meet' favorite books read by the librarians. Readers who attended this event learned about a variety of fiction and nonfiction titles in a "speed dating" style. The librarians who put this event together selected five of their favorite titles and introduced these books in ten minute rounds to the residents. "All enjoyed the event and commented about the fun and unique way to select books they might not otherwise have encountered or picked up from the shelf," said Victoria Edwards, West Bloomfield Library Marketing Specialist. "From what I've observed, it helps people get excited about reading. Whether they're a big reader, in a reading slump or haven't read a book in decades, the event promoted the excitement of reading books in JSL residents again!" | KICKING BACK AT KENSINGTON |
Adventurous Meer residents Allan Grundy, Phyllis Subar, Marcia Tanzman, Steven Meyers, Audrey Demak and Evelyn Grant enjoyed a picnic and boat ride on the Island Queen at Kensington Metropark this week. With a picnic lunch on a beautiful summer day, residents reminisced about going to the park with their children, picnicking, canoeing and ending the day with ice cream. During the boat ride, everyone learned about the history of the park and the animals that inhabit the park including eagles, swans, turtles and rabbits. |

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain
A Hit at the Stage
My beloved parents, Rabbi Moshe and Kayla Polter of blessed memories were well acquainted with community individuals and their families. One of those was the Goldberg family of the Stage Delicatessen, then located on Nine Mile Road in Oak Park.
One Sunday afternoon, my parents were invited to join the Goldberg’s at their home for a barbecue. Being that my parents adhered to the kosher dietary laws, my mother prepared a large aluminum pan of her favorite home-made fried farfel and onions. This was a true hit.
The very next day, Stage’s owner, Jack Goldberg called my mother, Kayla, for the farfel recipe. One week later, “Kayla’s Farfel” was proudly featured on the menu of this famous non-kosher Stage Delicatessen.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
