January 2024

As we embark on a brand-new year, there is no better time to reflect on the successes of the past year, look toward the opportunities ahead, and say thank you once again for trusting us to support you in the work you do to improve the lives of children and families!

In 2023, the CEBC continued our mission to advance the effective implementation of evidence-based practices for children and families involved with the child welfare system through our free, publicly available website. More than 290,000 individuals with statewide agencies, counties, and public and private organizations utilized our website in 2023 for information and assistance with making critical decisions around selecting and implementing evidence-based practices.

We look forward to continuing to provide you with new and updated resources and tools, and through our partnership with California Training Institute (CalTrin), free science-based, professional development and extended learning opportunities!

Here’s to our continued collaboration in 2024 as we work to improve child safety, increase permanency, family and community stability, and promote child and family well-being!

New CEBC Topic Area Summary for Mentoring Programs (Child & Adolescent):

Programs included in the CEBC's Mentoring Programs (Child & Adolescent) topic area are defined as programs in which there is a structured relationship between a child or adolescent involved in the child welfare system and an older individual (the mentor), with the goal of developing the competence and potential of the child or adolescent (the mentee).

Resources From the CEBC!

During January, we are highlighting CEBC-specific resources related to several important awareness initiatives taking place this month:

National Human Trafficking Prevention Month provides an opportunity for organizations to come together and educate the public about human trafficking through the sharing of information and resources aimed at preventing and responding to human trafficking.

  • The Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents: Services for Victims topic area highlights programs reviewed by the CEBC that focus on providing services for youth aged 17-years-old and younger who have engaged in, solicited for, or been forced to engage in sexual conduct or performance of sexual acts (e.g., stripping) in return for a benefit, such as money, food, drugs, shelter, clothing, gifts, or other goods or for financial or some other gain for a third party.

In recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr., National Day of Service, National Day of Racial Healing, and International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we encourage you to explore interventions on the CEBC website designed to address disparities in the child welfare services received by minorities and/or the disproportionate representation of ethnic minorities in the child welfare system.

  • The Reducing Racial Disparity and Disproportionality in Child Welfare: Programs topic area highlights programs that propose replicable strategies for reducing disparities and disproportionality. Qualifying programs work to reduce disparity and/or disproportionality at various stages in the child welfare system: screening for child abuse and neglect; investigation of allegations; service provision to families, children, and adolescents; out-of-family placement in foster care; adoption; and reunification.

January 12, 2024 | 9:00 a.m. - Noon

During this fun and interactive workshop, you will learn about why we all need support in our lives. You will also utilize hands-on tools to assess, plan for, and develop social connections and support. Practical tools and techniques will be shared during the training to promote the expansion of support systems and connections. Typically, system professionals do not recognize the development of support systems as an important component of their role. When families are struggling, access to support is often the answer to success. This training is ideal for anyone working with youth and families that could benefit from creating a robust support system.
