Reconciliation Walk Volunteers Needed

Mid-Summer Greetings!

Albeit brief, this newsletter highlights our annual back-to-school supplies program and upcoming fall events.

We hope that you might consider participating in our virtual Settler Discussion Series session in September, or attend our in-person events hosted in B.C., Ontario, and Nova Scotia.

We trust that you and your loved ones have been able to reconnect throughout this summer season.

Program Highlight

Back-to-School Campaign Begins

For over five years, True North Aid has provided thousands of backpacks and school supplies to children living in remote Indigenous communities across Canada. As we approach the upcoming 2023/2024 school year, we have received more requests than ever to help fill the gap in providing these essential supplies.

With applications received from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the territories, our goal is to fill over 2300 backpacks with school supplies. Each kit includes a backpack, ruler, pencil case, pencils, pens, notebooks, glue sticks, scissors, binders and more!

Our organization is committed to supporting communities located in the most northern regions of Canada, many of which can only be accessed by plane or ferry, while others are more than a two hour drive from the nearest essential goods or services. Indigenous people in these areas therefore face unique barriers in accessing necessary school supplies.

Shop Digitally With Us!

We welcome businesses and individuals to "shop" with us, choosing the price point of supplies that helps us provide Indigenous students with the tools to succeed in the upcoming school year.

Your business can engage employees in meaningful fundraising efforts that directly support Indigenous communities via an online giving experience. In three easy steps, employees are invited to participate in this campaign, learn a little bit about the good work of True North Aid, and then they are encouraged to donate by "shopping" for school supplies at varying costs.

If you think your company would like to participate, please email our team member, Christine Jones, Donor Relations and Corporate Outreach at christine@truenorthaid.ca or call Christine at 306-517-2431.

As an individual donor, you are invited to purchase supplies through our back-to-school specific donation form, where you too, can virtually shop for school supplies. You can do so by clicking this link: My Back-to-School Donation

Whether you’re able to chip in towards shipping costs, or you’re able to purchase a full backpack with supplies, each gift adds up to a big impact.

We are grateful for your recognition of the urgency

to support education in Indigenous communities.

Join Patty Krawec, speaker and author of Becoming Kin: An Indigenous Call to Unforgetting the Past and Reimagining Our Future on a weekend retreat that explores the relationship and responsibilities we have to ourselves, our families, and to one another. Together, we will reimagine the relationships we have inherited and consider the practical ways we can move forward in solidarity and social justice. Learn More/Register

Reconciliation Walk Volunteers Needed

Kingston - Toronto - Kitchener/Waterloo

In our effort to support National Day For Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th (also Orange Shirt Day), True North Aid's Reconciliation Walk provides non-Indigenous Canadians with an opportunity to learn about the timeline of Canada’s residential school legacy through an interactive, self-guided experience on a wooded trail.

Further, the Reconciliation Walk hopes to instill an urgency for change and action in moving forward together in justice and solidarity.

We are looking for committed individuals to help us host this educational and impactful event.

Tuesday & Thursday Evenings

in September @7pm EST (virtual)

In preparing for National Truth and Reconciliation Day on September 30th, we are hosting the Settler Discussion Series twice a week for two weeks. This 4-part session presents the truth about Canada’s historical and current relationship between non-Indigenous and Indigenous people by addressing the topics of Privilege, Land, Residential Schools, and Allyship in a factual way. Each session is approx. 1 – 1.5 hours long.
