SUMMER ISSUE

Block Party Celebration

The annual Bluff Heights Neighborhood Association’s 4th of July Block Party was a sparkling success. It was a beautiful day, made a little more delightful by a breeze that moved through the event all day long. This event is one of many things that make Bluff Heights a great place to live, and a huge debt of gratitude goes to the BHNA board members who work so hard on the annual affair. There were many highlights, including the popular chili cookoff, dogs in costumes parading up and down the street, and the delicious hot dog (or bratwurst) “boat” served with a friendly smile. Many happy kids had their faces painted by Veronica Cherene, and Jason Walker ran a fun water balloon toss. Thank you to Joyce Hackett and Lee Apel for leading us in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The Cake Walk is always a popular event, and more than 40 cakes were given away. If you’re looking for some tasty chili, you should contact the winners of the Chili Cookoff; the meat chili winner was Erik McKinney and the veggie chili winner was Julie Bolton and family. This year we had a fire truck on one end of Vista and a vintage Volkswagen micro bus on the other. One was popular with the younger kids and the other was getting a lot of attention from adult attendees who are young at heart. The event drew more than 600 people who were all happy to celebrate the holiday with their neighbors. You can find a slideshow of photos from the event on the homepage of www.bluffheights.org.

Cleaning Up the Bay Two Kayaks at a Time

Bluff Heights resident Michelle “Elle” Howard and her father kayak through Alamitos Bay, the Los Cerritos Channel, and the Los Cerritos Wetlands to pick up trash on a weekly basis. We asked Elle a few questions about their efforts.

How long have you been kayaking and what got you into kayaking?

I’ve been kayaking since I was a kid. My earliest memories of being on the water were with my family when I was four years old. We had a 16-foot canoe that fit our young family of five, and we’d paddle around in the Upper Newport Bay. At the time, my parents had gone back to school to study geology, so they would take my brothers and me out on the weekends to the ocean, mountains, and desert, teaching us what they’d learned from their classes. I believe those early experiences with my family seeded my lifelong fascination with nature and its conservation.

The Benefits of Living in a Close-Knit Neighborhood

How fortunate we are to live in an honest and thoughtful neighborhood! At the BHNA’s 4th of July Block Party last week, a neighbor named Madison lost her grandmother’s antique ring. All of us who have lost something irreplaceable know how awful that feeling is. Madison told her neighbor Christine that she had lost her precious ring; Christine put Madison in touch with me, and we found and returned the ring to her that day. Madison could not have been more grateful to the person who turned in her grandmother’s ring and said she will have it sized properly so she doesn’t lose it again. Thank you to our neighbor who turned in the ring, and please know that Madison is forever grateful. That is the Bluff Heights way!

Squirrels: Friend or Foe?

Spending more time outdoors during the summer months puts us in closer proximity with wildlife in our urban neighborhood. Nothing is more curious than our neighborhood fox squirrels. In fact, squirrels are considered our master “gardeners of the forest,” planting the seeds and nuts needed to keep our ecosystem strong.

Is it Time to Trim your Waste-Line?

It's really simple to trim your "Waste-Line!" All you need to do is collect your e-waste, hazardous waste, and/or old tire waste and bring it to one of three local collection centers under the conditions set by the City of Long Beach on this flyer.

You will feel much lighter now that you took care of those extra notches on your Waste-Line! Doesn't being a loser feel good?
