The Third Sunday After Pentecost

John 13:1-20

"What King Jesus Wants"

Rev. Steve Digby

A  Message From Our Visiting Minister

It is a privilege to welcome Rev. Steve Digby to the pulpit for the second week in a row. On the June 26, Steve will preach on the text from the gospel of John, chapter 13, “Love One Another.”

Steve asks that we give some thought prior to Sunday to what it means to love one another.

While planning for his sabbatical perhaps the most important of tasks that Pastor Mitch organized was ensuring that outstanding ministers deliver sermons each week.  The diversity of the ministers he selected and their depth of faith and love of the Lord is, and will continue through the summer, to be a blessing to each of us.

Reverend Digby

Steve is a retired ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He has served congregations in Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Most recently he served First Christian Church in Lockhart, prior to that, he served Memorial Drive Christian Church in Houston, and congregations in Victoria, Odessa,  and Oak Cliff in Dallas.

 He comes from a long line of Disciples, going back to the 1830’s when an ancestor was influenced by Alexander Campbell’s peaching and helped to start the second Stone Campbell Movement church in Georgia.

Rev. Digby and his wife Gwen have three grown children and two grandsons who all live nearby.

From Anna Marie...

This is, perhaps, a reminder to us as we care for the long life of Round Rock Christian Church.

"As a conference minister in the United Church of Christ, I spend a lot of time with congregations who are declining in attendance, size and energy. Often the folks in those churches are looking back to remember what the church was like during their heyday — full pews, burgeoning Sunday school classes, and lots of financial support for programs and staff. That is not the reality of the mainline church in the 21st century. And yet, we look back. This scripture lesson, this good news, reminds us that “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God” Nostalgia is wonderful but nostalgia will not help the church survive or thrive. Just as we no longer use rabbit ears on our televisions or use a rotary phone, we can no longer employ the same methods of sharing the good news of God’s love. Let’s not spend our time looking back, seeking to replicate what was. Instead let us move bravely forward to engage the world in the here and now with the message of God’s love and grace." Bonnie B.

This is an ideal opportunity for us to practice loving one another.

Disciples Women’s Ministry Hosts June Game Day

What do you do to beat the heat when the 8th continuous day of 100+ degree weather plagues Central Texas? You drop in on Game Day at the church with a bag lunch to find fun and fellowship, over a choice of games. Balderdash, RLC, Mexican Train, and hand-held ice cream was a win-win situation for a baker’s dozen of friends on June 13. Mark your calendar for July 11, and August 8, for the two remaining Game Days this summer. All members and friends are welcome.

Social Justice Group Begins New Book On June 28

The social justice study group will begin reading a new book at its next meeting on Tuesday, June 28, at 11:00 a.m.  Zoom link below

Uncommon Conversations With A Black Man, by Emmanuel Acho, forms the springboard for group conversation. This is the group’s second book on race and racism.

Mr. Acho is a native of Dallas and the son of Nigerian immigrant parents. He is the host of the hit video series by the same name; however, perhaps he is most familiar as a former NFL player and Fox sports analyst. He began his professional career with the Cleveland Browns and later played with the Philadelphia Eagles while earning a master’s degree in the off season at the University of Texas.

New participants are encouraged to join the group. The book is available on Amazon and in local bookstores.

Elders Prayer/Closing Message

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

2 a time to be born, and a time to die;

a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;

3 a time to kill, and a time to heal;

a time to break down, and a time to build up;

4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh;

a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

5 a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;

a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

6 a time to seek, and a time to lose;

a time to keep, and a time to throw away;

7 a time to tear, and a time to sew;

a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

8 a time to love, and a time to hate;

a time for war, and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Most of us would agree that life has its ups and downs. Wise King Solomon believed this and reflected on our responses to fluctuating circumstances. In Ecclesiastes, he wrote: “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: . . . a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance”

We do a disservice to ourselves and others when we portray the Christian life as peaceful and happy all the time. Instead, the Bible portrays the believer’s life as consisting of seasons of ups and downs. In what season are you? Whether a time of joy or sadness, each season should motivate us to seek the Lord and trust Him.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, help us to turn to You not only in sadness but also in joy. We know You give us both good times and bad to draw us to You and help us grow. May we learn to trust You in all seasons of life. Amen.
