August 2023 Training and Peer Learning Opportunities from Project RISE * | |
Peer Learning Group: Thinking & Doing Session #1
August 3, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
This peer learning series will give K-5 Youth Development (YD) staff the opportunity to share with their peers the activity plans, strategies and resources they have been implementing thus far in programming and what they plan to do differently in the upcoming year. Sharing and reflecting on these activity plans will offer all participants a deeper understanding of how incorporating “Thinking and Doing” learning approaches will best meet the needs of all children in their program.
Differentiated Literacy Instruction Training
August 9, from 1-3 p.m.
Attention Certified Teachers! Learn how to use data from the ORF and Maze assessments to identify struggling readers and to develop reading intervention plans unique to each student. Attendees will also learn how to create a plan of action to differentiate reading instruction.
Structure and Clear Limits Training
August 14, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Ever wonder why some children participate in engaging activities while others put their head down on the table? In this training, youth development program staff will learn to recognize and respond to youth needs by creating routines and establishing effective guidelines and consequences that will result in positive youth engagement.
Youth Voice Training
August 14, from 2:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Are you providing children and youth with authentic, meaningful choices throughout your program? Does your program reflect the input of the youth involved? Participants will learn how to provide meaningful choices within activities and opportunities for youth input within the youth program itself.
Reframing Conflict Training
August 16, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
Learn to use a problem-solving approach to turn conflicts into educational opportunities. This workshop provides a six-step, youth-centered, nonthreatening way of resolving conflicts that occur in youth settings.
Planning and Reflection Training
August 16, from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Guide the children and youth in your programs through planning their activities, reflecting on how they approached their activity, and thinking about what they learned. Participants will learn powerful, easy-to-use methods that promote youth engagement in planning, implementing, and evaluating activities and projects.

Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday From July 24 Through August 6 * |
The 2023 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday begins on Monday, July 24, and ends on Sunday, August 6. There will be a second Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday beginning Monday, January 1, 2024, and ending on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
During the sales tax holiday period, tax is not due on the retail sale of:
- Clothing, footwear, and certain accessories with a sales price of $100 or less per item
- Certain school supplies with a sales price of $50 or less per item
- Learning aids and jigsaw puzzles with a sales price of $30 or less
- Personal computers and certain computer-related accessories with a sales price of $1,500 or less, when purchased for noncommercial home or personal use
The sales tax holiday does not apply to:
- Any item of clothing with a sales price of more than $100
- Any school supply item with a sales price of more than $50
- Books that are not otherwise exempt
- Computers and computer-related accessories with a sales price of more than $1,500
- Computers and computer-related accessories purchased for commercial purposes
- Rentals of any eligible items
- Repairs or alterations of any eligible items
- Sales of any eligible items within a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging establishment or airport

Associate Director of Communications - $74,017 Annual
The Associate Director of Communications is a key leadership team member, reporting to the Director of Communications, and is responsible for developing strategies and overseeing the execution of communications projects to ensure they are completed in a timely fashion and within budget. In this role, the Associate Director of Communications will lead team members in the development, execution, monitoring and completion of projects. This is done within the Communications department’s goals and vision, and strategy.
The Associate Director of Communications, under general guidance from the Director of Communications ensures the internal and external messages, brand and reputation of The Children’s Trust is of high quality, consistent and aligned with the organization’s values and goals. In this role, the incumbent will represent The Children’s Trust in internal and external meetings and events at the request of, or on behalf of, the Director of Communications. The Associate Director of Communications exercises discretionary judgment regarding the operations of the communications team. Work performance is reviewed directly by the Director of Communications through meetings, reports, and observation of results achieved.

Business Controller - $85,120-148,961 Annual
The Business Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of The Children' Trust. This includes, but is not limited to, the supervision of the work performed by the Accountants, Senior Accounting Analysts, Accounting Operations Manager and Fiscal Data Integrity Analyst of The Children’s Trust in accordance with The Children’s Trust (The Trust) procurement and accounting policies and procedures, Generally Accepted Principles (GAAP), regulations promulgated by the Governmental Accounting Standards (GASB) and Government Auditing Standards. As directed by the Finance Director, the Business Controller will be engaged in key functions such as planning, managing, monitoring and evaluating the fiscal activities and functions of The Trust and its service providing organizations to ensure that daily and long term financial activities and controls are created and maintained to achieve organizational objective and safeguard assets.

The Research and Evaluation Analyst is a critical member of both cross- and inter-departmental teams at The Children’s Trust who engages in proactive problem-solving and critical thinking/analysis related to the design and effectiveness of various child, youth and family services. Program Manager - $55,968 Annual
The position manages the full life cycle of assigned funded program(s) and services located throughout Miami-Dade County. This person requires occasional non-traditional work hours (weekends and evenings) and reliable transportation.
This professional position will support the Programs Management Team in implementing strategies that foster collaboration among internal and external stakeholders to ensure services are delivered in accordance with The Children’s Trust standards and latest evidence-based practices. S/he is responsible for utilizing change management, knowledge, skills, and behaviors to promote continuous quality improvement throughout the assigned contracts and projects. This person will be assigned a caseload of contracts and may serve as initiative/project lead. Development Director
The Development Director will support the advancement functions of the organization, including building, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding a portfolio of donors for annual and multi-year gifts. Assistant Site Director
The Assistant Site Director (ASD) is responsible for the efficient and effective delivery of programs and services that most directly affect Breakthrough Miami Scholars and families. An ASD oversees campus or site logistics, unpaid student volunteers and some stipended positions, such as Teaching Fellows. As an ambassador of the program, the ASD builds supportive relationships with students, parents, schools, the community and other stakeholders to ensure the academic and socio-enrichment success of all Breakthrough Scholars.

Site Director
The Site Director manages the staff and day-to-day operations of the school-year and summer programs at one of Breakthrough Miami’s six host school sites. This position is responsible for ensuring all program operations are aligned with Breakthrough Miami’s vision, mission and goals; and for continuously improving educational enrichment and operational processes.
The individual in this role is able to operate effectively in diverse environments, achieve outcomes in a flexible, fast-paced environment, lead change and inspire others to action, and communicate consistently and effectively.
Director BreakthroughU– College Access
The Director, BreakthroughU – College Access oversees all activities that support high school student college-preparedness, including all BreakthroughU site programs. The director will build relationships with students, parents, and key high school and college partners to help students build the life and leadership skills necessary to enroll in competitive colleges and pursue career goals. The Director plays a leadership role in developing program, and research partnerships with the University of Miami, and maintains mechanisms for ongoing engagement of BTM college-based alumni.
