November 2022
Newsletter
Welcome to the November Issue of the Regional Newsletter

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Let me begin by thanking everyone who participated in and attended the ERA Annual Convention. It was a great time of blessing as we were able to meet in person for the first time in several years. I am thankful that we had technology that allowed us to meet the last couple of years, but there is nothing like being able to see people face to face, to talk with one another, to shake one another's hand, and to hug one another. The two worship services were certainly a highlight of the convention. Brent Ross brought two dynamic sermons concerning the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ. The music that was led by Nat Stein, was a powerful reminder of the greatness of our God. We were also blessed by the special music of Don Plummer. Workshops and devotionals also added a great depth and richness to our two days of meeting together. What can I say about the business session on Saturday morning?  We accomplished the business that needed to be covered. If you were not there, you missed a great time of worshipping the Lord, and fellowshipping with people of like faith. The good news is that, Lord willing, we will meet together in person next year in October. I hope that you will plan on attending next year’s convention. The tentative dates are October 20, 21.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving next week, on behalf of the ERA Board of Directors, I want to wish you, your family, and your church family a blessed time of giving thanks to our Lord for His many blessings He has bestowed on us. There are many scripture passages that I could site in regards to the necessity of giving thanks to the Lord, but I will close with the scripture that is the basis for my sermon on this Thanksgiving Sunday. Psalm 100 as translated in the NLT is as follows: “Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before Him, singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He has made us, and we are His. We are His people, the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving, go into His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and His faithfulness continues to each generation.”

Wendell DuBois, Tammy DuBois and Virgene Hughes. It is designed to assist those seeking a call to vocational ministry in achieving their academic goals. The application needs to be postmarked by August 31 to be considered. The scholarship monies will be disbursed during the 2nd semester of the academic year.

Berkshire Christian College Scholarship Fund - Scholarship amount varies depending on the program of study. The purpose and description of the scholarship is:

  • Seminary education in partnership with Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary at four campuses - two in Mass., one in Fla., one in NC. (www.gordonconwell.edu) Advent Christian students receive up to a 50% tuition reduction. (Additional scholarship assistance may also be available.)
  • Theological formation through the Ministry Training Institute (MTI). Students enrolled in MTI are eligible for scholarships through Berkshire Christian.

Castle Hill Scholarship Fund - The Castle Hill Advent Christian Church closed its doors in December of 2019 due to declining numbers and the difficulty of finding pastoral leadership. Through a generous donation, a Ministry Scholarship will be established in their name. It is their desire that this ministry scholarship be established to help fund individuals who are seeking vocational ministry training either from a ministry training program within the Advent Christian constituency, or if a person chooses to seek to prepare for vocational ministry outside of the Advent Christian constituency, the Christian institution must be accredited.
Applicants are required to fill out the application and have all of the required information turned in to the Superintendent’s Office by September 15th in order to be considered by the Eastern Regional Board of Directors. The Board will present scholarships to qualified applicants by dividing $2000 dollars among them per year. If only one applicant applies, the cap for an individual scholarship is $1000 dollars made out to the school of their choosing.

Monthly Devotional Thought
Exalted on High

October came and went and was considered one of the greatest awareness months: Breast Cancer month, caffeine addiction recovery month, chili month, crime prevention month, Fire Prevention month, Pastor Appreciation month, National dessert month, Domestic Violence month, LGBT History month, German-American heritage month, Italian-American Heritage month, Pasta month, Pizza month, Sausage month, Vegetarian month, the “I’M JUST ME BECAUSE” month, and the list goes on. Read it, and have a good laugh.
If I could paraphrase the world/culture we live in, “We honor and exalt what we love…we love what we honor and exalt.” Listen to what God exalts. “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11
God the Father exalts and honors His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and gives him a name above every name so that everyone should bow and confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God. During his days on earth, Jesus certainly honored the Father through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit honors and glorifies the Son (John 16:14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you).
We are called to honor our Father in heaven, to honor Jesus through the Holy Spirit. The Apostle John says, “…That all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.” John 5:23
Having served in the Army, I am familiar with the code of honor: “know it and embrace it.” Honor is one of those values of respect, integrity, courage in all that we did and said. We were to honor our officers. We were to honor the constitution, and the Flag. We were to honor God and Country. We were to honor our superiors, and every order given to us. In fact, the code of honor implied that we were to honor all people. The code of Honor implied that we were a people of honor. Someone once said, “Having honor defines you to others…if you have honor, you are a known quantity and therefore can be trusted.”
God honored His son because of what Jesus did on our behalf. He willingly gave us His honor in becoming one like us to live, to be mocked, to endure ridicule and suffer a cruel horrible dishonoring death for you and me. By his resurrection, ascension, and pouring out His Holy Spirit upon us, He honors us with eternal life. Shouldn’t we live our lives to honor Him? To honor our Father? Yes, and to honor the Holy Spirit in all we say and do. Oh, by the way, that implies we honor one another as well.
Fallen depraved humanity will honor and exalt what they love. As believers and followers of Jesus, we are to honor and exalt the Almighty, the Lord Jesus Christ, soon to return.
