In the heart of Los Angeles, April Esquivel, a passionate individual currently pursuing a Master of Social Work (MSW) at California State University of Northridge (CSUN), found solace and purpose within the embrace of PESA. As a queer and non-binary person, April discovered not only a safe space but also an opportunity to give back to their community by joining PESA as an MSW Intern.
The journey to PESA unfolded when April, driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact, learned about the organization through a CSUN counselor. Intrigued by PESA's commitment to social advocacy, they embarked on an interview process led by Dr. Michael Johnson, Director of Behavioral Health at PESA, which paved the way for a transformative experience.
At the core of April's positive journey with PESA is their supervisor, Amancay Ledezma. The supervisor's impact has been profound, creating a safe space that extends beyond the professional realm. In April's words, "A lot of what we talked about are things that I think I'm going to keep with me for the rest of my life, professionally and personally."
In the role of an MSW Intern, their responsibilities include assisting youth psychosocially, guiding them through the intricacies of the Teen Court program, and facilitating their entry into PESA. The commitment to helping the youth in their community stems from April's roots in the Los Angeles area, creating a deep-seated connection to the cause.
PESA prides itself on its commitment to providing a safe haven for everyone involved – interns, staff members, youth, and their families. Growing up queer, April experienced a scarcity of spaces where they could truly feel secure. PESA stands out as an
organization that ensures everyone knows they are in a safe space, encouraging open dialogue and offering unwavering support.
For those considering joining PESA, April has a compelling message: "Go for it! It's a safe space, and there's going to be a lot of opportunities. There's always going to be somebody willing to help. There will never be a point where you might feel shut out because everybody really is kind and wants to see everyone in the program succeed."
Within the diverse tapestry of individuals comprising PESA, April's narrative serves as a powerful testament to the organization's unwavering dedication to fostering inclusivity, providing support, and cultivating a nurturing community. This environment empowers individuals like April to not only flourish in their professional endeavors but also to thrive personally.
