DELIGHTING OURSELVES IN THE LORD
Psalm 37:4 reads: “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give the desires of thine heart.”
The word delight is not what we often think it is, and that would be to really love or like something or someone. The meaning of Delight in the Hebrew is the word ‘anag. It means to be soft or pliable.
This would indicate that we are to be able to bend with what is good for us. As we are pliable in the hands of God, like clay that is molded, then God gives us the desires of our heart. But we must first be pliable. The word desires here means to petition, or our requests.
When Russell and I sold our home in 2021 we looked for a retirement park that would suit our needs. We looked and looked, and finally decided on the park that we live in. There were several places for sale, but none of them quite suited our needs. Because we continue to minister six to seven days a week, we needed a place that would have a room that would work for an office, and a large enough living room or family room to accommodate a crowd of people when we would have meetings. We found some we liked, but they weren’t all that we needed. We sold our home and had about 30 days to find a place. The day we got the contract on our home, we came to the park we were in to make an offer on a place. It was much smaller than we needed, but we could make it work if we bought it.
On the way to make the offer I told the Lord I didn’t like “wooden” floors. (The place we were going to make an offer on had wood floors.) I liked tile and I preferred carpet. (The place we were going to make an offer on had no carpet.) I also told him I really wanted a place where I could have a Christmas tree in a window. I never told this to Russell. When we got to the owner of the park that was selling the properties here, I casually asked him if there was something bigger. He told us there was a place that would be coming on the market, but it was quite large, and it was on a double lot which meant that it would be more expensive than a single lot in lot rent.
I asked to see it and he showed it to us. The minute Russell and I walked into this place we both knew it was the one that God reserved for us. It was everything we could ask for. It had tile and it had carpet. It had enough room for everything that we would need, including office space. It also had a porch with windows to display a Christmas tree. We made an offer and the owner accepted it. It wasn’t even on the market for sale, but God made it available.
God had given us the “desires of our heart.” When you delight yourselves in Him, you can be sure that He will do just that. If he did that for us, he will do that for you. The key is to put him first. Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” When you put God first, He takes care of the rest, for us that was tile, carpet, windows and so many other things that we could never have dreamed of. He gave us the desires of our heart.
