Get Involved!
Dear DEC Members,

Happy New Year! I hope everyone was able to enjoy the holidays and enjoy some restful time.

I am writing you to discuss ExIm Bank who is celebrating their 80th anniversary this year. In 2019 all the local DECs assisted ExIm in receiving rechartering/reauthorization.

As we approach 2026, we are asking that all of you participate in the below survey. This information will be used by the EXIM Council on Small Business. Please take this survey and make your voice heard.

I wish you all a prosperous 2024!
Sincerely,

Jonathan Szucs
Chair, National Association of District Export Councils
IMPORTANT SURVEY ON EXIM BANK FOR ALL DEC MEMBERS!

Earlier this month, Jonathan Szucs, on behalf of the NADEC Board of Directors, sent out an email request to DEC leadership requesting support the 2024 SME Export Community Survey on the U.S. Export-Import Bank.

The survey is on behalf of the ExIm Council on Small Business with the objective to aid agency leadership in the understanding of the bank’s current level of awareness, perception, and satisfaction within the export community.

We encourage all DEC members to take a few minutes to take this short survey (see link below), and to share the link with fellow colleagues and business partners who are involved in exporting. The survey will be open through the end of February, after which a summary analysis will be distributed to all DEC chairs along with a national press release.

ExIm is an important resource for many DEC members, providing key credit risk mitigation and financial support that would otherwise not be available to U. S. exporters.

Recent data for the agency’s two key programing areas for SME exporters, namely:
-       credit insurance and
-       working capital, reflect a significant decline in usage.

It is anticipated this survey will help management to identify specific areas for review and in developing new opportunities to pursue – all in an effort to significantly increase the agency’s impact of U. S. export success prior to its next congressional reauthorization in 2026.

If you haven’t done so earlier, please take a few minutes to complete this short, ten question survey – your response and input matters!

U.S. Commerce Department Announces $200 Billion Milestone in Foreign Direct Investment

Last week, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced that it has achieved a new milestone of facilitating more than $200 billion in client-verified foreign direct investment (FDI), supporting more than 200,000 jobs throughout the United States and its territories since the SelectUSA program, housed within the Department’s International Trade Administration, was established in 2011.

Saving the Panama Canal will take years and cost billions, if it’s even possible
AJOT, Peter Millard and Michael D McDonald, January 3, 2024

The vestiges of an ancient forest tell the story of just how bad things are at the drought-stricken Panama Canal.

With water levels languishing at six feet (1.8 meters) below normal, the canal authority capped the number of vessels that can cross. The limits imposed late last year were the strictest since 1989, when the conduit was shut as the US invaded Panama to extract its de facto ruler, Manuel Noriega. Some shippers are paying millions of dollars to jump the growing queue, while others are taking longer, costlier routes around Africa or South America.

The constraints have since eased slightly due to a rainier-than-expected November, but at 24 ships a day, the maximum is still well below the pre-drought daily capacity of about 38. As the dry season takes hold, the bottleneck is poised to worsen again.

A roundup of free trade deals the UK signed in 2023
City A.M., Jessica Frank-Keyes, December 21, 2023

In July 2023, the UK signed an agreement to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Since the UK exited the European Union in 2020, a major focus of government policy has been negotiating new trade agreements with nations across the globe.

Speaking at the global investment summit last month, business and trade secretary Kemi Badenoch said she wanted the UK to be seen as a “dynamo for investment, free trade and growth”.

While work is still underway on securing deals with the USA and India, among others, there have been some successes this year, from the Australia and New Zealand deals taking effect, to the UK signing up to the CPTPP agreement.

Global Trade: 5 Emerging Dynamics Will Shape The Next Decade

The world trade map is being redrawn as global growth slows and regional links deepen, according to a new BCG report.
BF/ Boston Consulting Group, January 10, 2024

As the global economy adjusts to persistent economic and geopolitical pressures and disruptions, the familiar routes that defined the world trade map are being redrawn and regional trade lanes are playing a greater role in world trade, according to a new analysis by Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
“This is a not a blip. These changes in trade patterns are reshaping the global economy. Companies need to be thoughtful and decisive, or risk being caught out by fast-moving factors outside of their control.”
— Michael McAdoo, BCG
The changing trade picture shows that overall global trade is growing at a slower rate than the world economy, a fundamental shift away from the trend of trade-led globalism that the world enjoyed in most of the years since the end of the Cold War. World trade in goods is forecast to grow at 2.8% per year, on average, through 2032, compared with an estimated 3.1% growth rate for global GDP in the same period, according to the report.

Travel Tips for Long Flights. Here’s What You Need to Know

Time, Mallory Moench, December 21, 2023

From what you should wear to how you can make an economy seat more comfortable, here are travel tips to get you through your next long flight.

How do I prepare my body for flying?

Jeff Kahn, CEO of the sleep tracker app Rise Science, told Condé Nast Traveler that the best way to ensure you travel and sleep well is to start a trip with “low sleep debt.” A few days ahead of a long-haul trip, you could also begin gradually adjusting your sleep times so that you’re more in-sync with the time zone of your destination.
