Calling All Artists: Upcoming Show Opportunity!
St. Mark’s is pleased to invite portrait artists to show their works in our Sacred Arts Gallery September 2, 2022 – December 2, 2022. “Portraits” meaning human bust or figure, although an animal may be included with the human portrait. All media accepted.
First come, first serve. Up to 3 pieces per artist and no more than 30” wide. Deadline, Friday, August 26th. Images not required. We can accommodate approximately 50 pieces, depending on sizes. This is not a juried show.

Feel free to contact either Heather Gaume and/or Audrey Minard (email them here) with questions or to request entry forms. There is no entry fee although, should your artwork sell, the Sacred Art Guild retains 20 percent of the purchase price for use in promoting the arts. However, the artwork need not be for sale.
Asylum Seekers Need Athletic Shoes
Once again St. Mark’s will be collecting athletic shoes (slip-ons and laces) for the folks on the buses coming here from El Paso’s Annunciation House.

The ad-hoc group, Albuquerque Asylum Welcome is seeing one bus a week. These travelers are from many countries: Turkey, Cuba, Brazil, and Haiti most recently.

The need is for walking shoes even though most of these people will be heading out in a few days to a sponsor. Usually they travel by plane, but also trains and buses. They stay here in a motel for a few days to get checked for COVID and to make travel arrangements that are typically paid for by their family or friends who are sponsoring them. Each gets a new set of clothes and shoes if available.

Especially needed are men’s sizes 7-9, women’s sizes 5-9 and children’s shoes of all sizes. Don’t break the bank. Discount and big box stores are OK. New or slightly used only, please.

It’s one small thing a person can do about the chaos in our world right now. Please drop them in the rainbow-colored box near the east door to St. Mark’s. Someone will gather them up and take them to Second Presbyterian Church’s clothing bank for asylum seekers. If you have questions, please email Mary Beth Libbey, Pauline Artery or Mary Ellen Elliott (email them here). If you would like to help serve meals or guide folks through the airport, our contact person is Virginia Dickson (email here).

Thank you to all who have donated sweatsuits and shoes in the past.
Summer of Conversation Cafés
During the summer, we encourage teens, adults, and school-aged kids to utilize the "Sunday School Hour" (~11:15AM-12:15PM) to participate in our Summer of Conversation through Conversation Cafes, and one-on-one conversations. On most summer Sundays, Deacon David or Mother Sylvia will facilitate conversation & storytelling activities for Elementary & Middle-School-aged youth in the library during this hour. If you're new to St. Mark's Summer of Conversation, please be sure seek out a clergy member to help get you started.

A note about child/nursery care: Since we don't presently have any families with young children utilizing nursery care during worship at St. Mark's at this time, for the summer months we will be shifting the nursery care workers schedule to provide nursery care and playground supervision on Summer Sundays from 10:30-12:30PM, enabling families to worship together, and parents and older siblings to use the time following worship for fellowship and "Summer of Conversation" activities and conversations.
Thursday Eucharist: Summer of Preaching Festival
Did you know that every Thursday St. Mark’s has a midweek 11AM Holy Eucharist?

This summer we have invited our retired clergy to offer sermons at our Thursday Eucharist. Our full-time staff members will be preaching during the summer some as well.

Consider it a kind of Summer Preaching Festival featuring: Rev. Rhonda McIntire, Rev. Neil Elliott, Rev. Michael Jupin, Rev. Rob Clark, Rev. Jim Porter and Rev. Billie Abraham. Thursday sermons often reflect on the life of a saint in our Holy Women, Holy Men calendar or on the readings for that day. We are looking forward to hearing some new voices in the pulpit and to building up this midweeks service. St. Mark’s Thursday 11AM Eucharist is a very accessible service, slightly more casual, includes a coffee hour afterwards, and is followed by an amazing small group Bible Study on the Beatitudes. It’s is also a great Eucharist to attend if you know that you might be out of town on Sunday. For the contemplative among us or those seeking quiet, there is also a 30-minute meditative sit in the Stoney Chapel at 10:30 (Enter by Stoney Chapel door in east parking lot) prior to the 11 AM Eucharist.

Hope to see you there.

DIOCESE & BEYOND
From: Office of Public Affairs, The Episcopal Church
Date: August 3, 2022
Note: Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry is among the bishops from around the Anglican Communion attending the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury, England, who have thus far signed the following statement affirming and celebrating LGBTQ+ people. Additional signatures are being added.

“So then, you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God.” - Ephesians 2:19

“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” - John 13:34

God is Love! This love revealed by Jesus, described in the Scriptures and proclaimed by the Church, is Good News for all - without exception. That is why we believe that LGBT+ people are a precious part of God’s creation - for each of us is ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ (Psalm 139:14), and all are equally loved.

We recognise [sic] that many LGBT+ people have historically been wounded by the Church and particularly hurt by the events of the last few weeks. We wish to affirm the holiness of their love wherever it is found in committed relationships.

We therefore commit to working with our siblings across the Communion to listen to their stories and understand their contexts, which vary greatly. However, we will never shy away from tackling discrimination and prejudice against those of differing sexualities and gender identities.

Together, we will speak healing and hope to our broken world and look forward to the day when all may feel truly welcomed, valued and affirmed.

Signed by bishops from across the Anglican Communion including:

Most Revd Mark Strange, Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church
Most Revd Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States
Most Revd Naudal Alves Gomes, Archbishop of Brazil
Most Revd Linda Nicholls, Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Canada
Most Revd Andy Johns, Archbishop of Wales

Soul Songs for Every Season
October 13-15, 2022
Santa Maria de la Vid Abbey, Albuquerque, NM

Join Mother Sylvia and Music That Makes Community for a spacious, three-day/two-night retreat  . As we enjoy the beauty of autumn in the desert, we’ll sing and reflect on the theme “Soul Songs for Every Season.” Recognizing the rapid change and constant pivoting in our lives the past few years, we'll lean into a spacious time for rest and rejuvenation, tune ourselves to the rhythms of the land, and listen for songs and spiritual practices that can sustain us through every season of life.

Registration fees are on a sliding scale and include lodging, all meals (from dinner Thursday to lunch Saturday), and all workshop materials. We ask you to pay what is generous and affordable for you, with gratitude for the time and skill of our presenters. Additional scholarship support is also available, if needed.

The retreat will be led by a dynamic team of musicians and clergy from the United States and Canada, including Sylvia Miller Mutia, David Poole, Patti Powell, Emilie Teresa Smith, and Paul Vasile. There will be regular opportunities for communal worship and reflection, as well as time for personal rest and renewal.

Come as you are!
