FROM THE RECTOR

A Prayer for Labor Day

When I lived up north, Labor Day marked the end of summer. This was pretty much true both for the weather and for the cultural calendar—as determined, of course, by the schools. But down here it isn't the end of summer in either of those respects: schools have been in session for weeks, and goodness knows we're a long way from brisk autumn air. The loss of this cultural resonance, though, may let us rediscover what the holiday was originally about.

Notice that I said "holiday," and not "holy day." This is a civic holiday, but as with Independence Day and Thanksgiving, the church over time has decided that it has something to say on Labor Day. Here's the Collect for Labor Day: Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

There's nothing here about the change of seasons or the start of school. It is entirely a theology of mutuality, a recognition of how our lives are interwoven with each other. This is true in the world and, of course, true in the church as well. God has set us into communities and ecosystems of interdependence and we can only finally do what we can do together. That's not always the myth we live by, but thanks be to God for the ways we depend on each other, and on those we have not met.

The Epistle to the Romans
Sundays, 9:30 AM, Berlin Room
Join us Sunday at 9:30 AM in the Berlin Room for a study of St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans.

Someone reading St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans has repeatedly been a turning point in Christian history: whether it’s Augustine becoming a Christian through hearing Romans, Martin Luther starting the Protestant Reformation after teaching a class on Romans, or John Wesley feeling his heart “strangely warmed” while dropping into a bible study on Romans. This fall we’ll have our own encounter with Romans, reading the whole book over nine weeks. For more information contact Fr. Eric.

Book Study
Speaking of Sin by Barbara Brown Taylor
ZOOM beginning Tuesday August 15, 7:30 PM
Led by the Rev. Kimberly E. Dunn
Barbara Brown Taylors brings a fresh perspective to the language Christians use to identify and talk about the condemnation sin. "Sin," according to Barbara Brown Taylor, an Episcopal priest, "is our only hope, the fire alarm that wakes us up to the possibility of true repentance." She contends that sin can be "a helpful, hopeful word" that can move us from "guilt to grace." Taylor motivates and empowers Christians to talk about sin in a way that is necessary for understanding and accepting salvation, as well as how it could be translated into our daily lives.

There is one book still available. $15 donation. Sign up using the link below. The class schedule and zoom link will be emailed by the leader to class participants.

Contact the Rev. Kimberly Dunn for more information.
