Merry Christmas!

Christmas Cookies

Pastor David Johnson

One of our traditions at Christmas time is making M&M cookies. I remember my first M&M cookie at Granny's at Christmas time. I thought, "What a genius idea! A cookie, AND M&Ms together in one glorious package!"

Since then, I have always shared that joy with my grandchildren. While baking cookies, one of my grandchildren asked me why I put salt in the batter. Good question! It doesn't seem they would go together, but they do because salt enhances other flavors by wakening the full body of whatever it touches.

Jesus said that we are the salt of the earth. When we are included into the batter of this earth, we - through Christ - awaken and enhance flavors that were once dormant. As salt, we bring out the sweetness of Christ in our environments! This Christmas season let's remember to include the salt. Let's introduce our neighbors to the best taste of Christmas -- Jesus Christ, our lord and savior!

For Unto Us

a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulders, and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Everlasting Father, as we celebrate the birth of your Son, fill our hearts with the joy that comes from knowing Him. May the joy of Christmas be a constant presence in our lives reminding us that the true source of happiness is found in Jesus Christ. Let us share this joy with others and be a reflection of your love in the world. Amen.

A Christmas Song and a Story -- O Holy Night

In 1847, a French parish priest asked a local poet to write a Christmas carol, even though the poet's church practice was a bit shaky. The poet wrote the beautiful lyrics and asked a composer friend to create the music. The carol was a hit and quickly spread throughout France. However, the local Church soon discovered the author was a socialist and the composer Jewish and banned the song for a time, but the people continued to sing it. In 1871, on Christmas Eve during the Franco-Prussian War, a French soldier ran out of his trench unarmed and began to sing this carol.

Silence fell across the battlefield, and when he finished, a German solder came out of his trench unarmed and sang a favorite German carol, "From Heaven Above to Earth I Come."

A 24-hour Christmas ceasefire followed.

Prayers for you and your families!

May your days be filled with peace, hope,

and joy this Christmas season.
