Newspapers are an excellent resource for finding a reference for and explaining a particular event. Seeing articles about your ancestors in the hometown newspaper can also be nostalgic.
RELIC provides many resources to access some local newspapers. We have several microfilm newspapers, including the Manassas Journal Messenger (under several different names), the Potomac News, and Evening Star.
You can visit the library catalog for an explanation of the names of a newspaper and the dates available. For more current dates, you can ask RELIC for a paper copy.
If you want to make a digital copy, there is a scanner for microfilm. All you need to bring with you is a USB drive.
The library also provides newspaper resources in the Digital Library. One example is The Washington Post Historical Newspaper Collection. It offers text and image articles for The Washington Post from 1877–2006. Another example is the Local Newspaper Index, which contains articles of interest and obituaries in various Prince William County newspapers.
RELIC also has some local newspapers online in the Digital Archives. In addition, RELIC has a subscription to newspapers.com, but it is only available for in-house use.
