Service and Mission Opportunities in August

Dig a Well from a Distance

Throughout August, we are raising funds through offerings and donations to help pay for the digging of a well in Kaduna State, Nigeria. This well is a project of the Shabach Beyond Center Nigeria, founded by our own Jerry and Rachael Swam Sidi. The Shabach Well will supply clean drinking water to more than 20,000 people in the Ungwan Boro community. Please be generous.

Service Opportunities at A Place to Be

A Place to Be, Family Promise’s day center for unhoused people in Bristol, always needs donations to support operations and provide for patrons. Most needed are blankets, backpacks, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and men’s and women’s underwear, pants, jackets, shoes, and T-shirts. Try to keep these in mind as you glean things from your closets and shelves.

Last week’s Windows incorrectly stated that donations could be dropped off at 137 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. However, Family Promise and the Salvation Army cannot receive donations while their staffs are attending to clients. To donate items, email Dottie Havlik or text her at 423-956-6747. She will receive and deliver your donations, including snacks.

Another way to assist with this local effort for unhoused people in Bristol is to volunteer to serve an occasional meal there, as we do for Sharing Christ. We need a group of people to provide the components for a hot lunch (casseroles, hot veggies, fruit, dessert) and folks willing to go to the day center for a couple of hours midday to set up, serve, clean up, and perhaps visit with some of the patrons. If you can help in any way with this meal, please email Beth Flannagan or reach her at 423-956-3837.

Be a Reading Buddy

Reading Buddies is gearing up for another school year. Thirty minutes of your time will make a huge difference in the life of the elementary student you will partner with! Last spring’s reading scores underline the importance of this help to elementary school students. Please email Kay Ward to let her know you want to be part of this important program with Bristol Tennessee City Schools.

Brad Rose Preaches Sunday

Brad Rose is Program Director for Adult & Teen Challenge of the Appalachian Regional Training Center. The Training Center provides Christian discipleship training for persons experiencing life-controlling problems. This is accomplished through spiritual and academic instruction, behavior management, work skills and ethics training, life management training, and emotional support, all delivered within a disciplined and regimented atmosphere. The organization also conducts community education programs and spiritual outreach.

The Training Center, founded in 1982, has a male campus in Princeton, WV; a female campus in Clarksburg, WV; and an adolescent girls program in Fincastle, VA. The objective of the training centers is to help students overcome the root problems affecting their ability to function normally in society.

Choir Is a Welcoming Place

The Sanctuary Choir season kicked off August 9 with a fellowship picnic highlighted by having former choir member Lou Hebb join us for the evening. Weekly rehearsals began Wednesday, and we will resume helping to lead Sunday worship August 20.

The choir is a welcoming place for all singers, young and old. Come join us! We would love to start our year with some new faces. If you have an interest in or any questions about the choir, email Pat Flannagan.

Organist's Footnotes

Adolphe Alexandre Silvain Marty (1865–1942) was a French organist, improviser, composer, and music educator who was blind for most of his life. Born in Albi in the Tarn department in the south of France, Marty became blind at the age of two and a half years. He entered the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris in 1874 and worked the organ with Louis Lebel (1831–1888). From 1884 to 1886 he studied music composition with Ernest Guiraud and pipe organ with César Franck at the Conservatoire de Paris, winning the first prize for organ in 1886, the first blind person to do so. In 1888 Marty succeeded Louis Lebel as organ teacher at the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles, where he taught until 1930. His students included Louis Vierne, Augustin Barié, Paul Allix, André Marchal, Jean Langlais, and Gaston Litaize. Léonce de Saint-Martin worked with him privately. Marty served as organist of Saint-Paul d’Orléans church from 1887 to 1888. In 1891 he succeeded Albert Renaud as organist of Saint-François-Xavier church in Paris, a position he held until 1941. He was closely linked to the organ builder Puget, inaugurating a number of their instruments, including the organ of Albi Cathedral on November 20, 1904. Marty died in Valence-d’Albigeois in the Tarn department on October 28, 1942.

Pray for One Another

We want to pray for and celebrate with you! Send us your prayer requests and glad tidings.

Condolences

The heart of our church nursery ceased beating August 12 in Tampa, Florida. For more than 10 years, Vickie Coleman was a loving presence, blessing the many children and families whose lives she touched. Our love and sympathy are with Bill Coleman, their family, and the many others who will miss her.

In Our Prayers

We have several unnamed or private requests. Please pray for the members of our community
