Embracing the Radiance: Exploring the Sunrise Service in the Armenian Church

The Sunrise service, the third daily ritual in the venerable tradition of the Armenian Church, carries with it a profound legacy. Historically, it unfolded amidst the tranquility of early morning, as monks intoned its melodies around 7 a.m., harmonizing with the rising sun that heralded the dawn of a new day. Directed towards God the Son, Christ Jesus, this sacred service symbolizes a spiritual awakening, inviting devotees to embrace the luminous presence of divinity.

Today, the Sunrise service finds its place within the solemnity of the Great Lent season, although its origins remain distinct. Through its resplendent hymns and fervent prayers, the service implores us to be vigilant, attuned to the imminent return of the Son of God. We beseech that the radiant light of Christ illuminate all who call upon His name, guiding us steadfastly along the path of righteousness.

At St. James Armenian Church, the beauty of this service is revered, performed with reverence on Sunday mornings following the Divine Liturgy. In the forthcoming editions of Oshagan, I aim to illuminate the profound meanings embedded within the exquisite hymns and offer reflections on the heartfelt prayers that resonate within our souls.

The first hymn "Harevelits" begins by evoking the imagery of unity and inclusivity, symbolized by the cardinal directions: East, West, North, and South. It encapsulates the idea that all nations and peoples, regardless of their origins or paths, join together in praising the Creator. This unity reflects the universal nature of divine worship and highlights the interconnectedness of humanity under the benevolent gaze of the Creator.

The imagery of the rising sun symbolizes renewal, enlightenment, and the dawn of a new day. It signifies the continuous cycle of creation and the eternal presence of divine light illuminating the world. As the sun rises, so does the hope for peace and spiritual awakening in the hearts of believers.

Moreover, the hymn calls upon the righteous assemblies, urging them to glorify the Holy Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It emphasizes the importance of communal worship and praises the transformative power of divine knowledge, which enlightens and guides believers on their spiritual journey.

In essence, this hymn serves as a poetic invocation, inviting believers to embrace the dawn of a new day with gratitude, praise, and a renewed commitment to spiritual enlightenment and peace.

Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian

Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian's sermon on February 25, 2024,

Title: "Embracing Divine Mercy: Reflections on the Parable of the Prodigal Son"

Today, we gather to explore one of the most profound and moving parables recounted in the Gospel of St. Luke—the Parable of the Prodigal Son. This narrative embodies the essence of divine mercy, forgiveness, and the boundless love of our Heavenly Father.

In this parable, we encounter a young man who demands his inheritance prematurely, squandering it in reckless living. Yet, upon reaching rock bottom, he comes to his senses and returns humbly to his father, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation. The father, filled with compassion, not only welcomes his lost son but celebrates his return with great joy and festivity.

At its core, this parable speaks to the universal human experience of sin, repentance, and redemption. We see ourselves reflected in the prodigal son—straying from the path of righteousness, seeking fulfillment in worldly pursuits, only to find emptiness and despair.

The early Church Fathers echoed the profound truths embedded within this parable, offering insights that continue to illuminate our understanding of divine love and forgiveness. St. Augustine, one of the towering figures of early Christianity, reflected on the transformative power of repentance, stating, "Repentance is the beginning of grace."

Indeed, the journey of the prodigal son begins with repentance—a turning away from sin and a turning towards God. It is a recognition of our own brokenness and a desire to be reconciled with our Creator. As we humble ourselves before the Lord, acknowledging our faults and shortcomings, we open ourselves to receive the abundance of His mercy.

St. John Chrysostom, renowned for his eloquence and deep spiritual insight, emphasized the incomprehensible nature of God's love, declaring, "Even if we are in the midst of a multitude, His eye is on each one of us, and He cares for each one of us as if we were the only person in the world."

The father in the parable exemplifies this boundless love—a love that transcends human understanding and surpasses all expectations. Despite the son's betrayal and disobedience, the father eagerly awaits his return, running to embrace him and restore him to the family fold. Such is the greatness of God's compassion towards His children—a love that knows no bounds and extends to the repentant and the purified sinner.

As we reflect on the Parable of the Prodigal Son, let us contemplate the profound implications for our own lives. Are we willing to humble ourselves before God, acknowledging our need for His mercy and forgiveness? Are we willing to extend that same mercy and forgiveness to those who have wronged us?

In conclusion, let us heed the timeless wisdom contained within this parable—a wisdom that invites us to embrace the transformative power of divine mercy, to seek reconciliation with our Heavenly Father, and to extend grace and forgiveness to others. May we, like the prodigal son, find solace in the embrace of our loving Father and experience the joy of restoration and renewal. Amen.

BIBLICAL READINGS

SUNDAY, MARCH 3, 2024

Luke 16:1-31

Then Jesus said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. So he summoned him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.’ Then the manager said to himself, ‘What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.’ So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ He answered, ‘A hundred jugs of olive oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.’ Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘A hundred containers of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill and make it eighty.’ And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.

“Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”

The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they ridiculed him. So he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of others; but God knows your hearts; for what is prized by human beings is an abomination in the sight of God.

“The law and the prophets were in effect until John came; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is proclaimed, and everyone tries to enter it by force. But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one stroke of a letter in the law to be dropped.

“Anyone who divorces his wife and marries commits adultery, and whoever marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.

“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’ He said, “Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father’s house—for I have five brothers—that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.’ Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’ He said, ‘No father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Ephesians 4:17-5:14

Now this I affirm and insist on in the Lord: you must no longer live as the Gentiles live, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of their ignorance and hardness of heart. They have lost all sensitivity and have abandoned themselves to licentiousness, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. That is not the way you learned Christ! For surely you have heard about him and were taught in him, as truth is in Jesus. You were taught to put away your former way of life, your old self, corrupt and deluded by its lusts, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to clothe yourselves with the new self, created according to the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil. Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant and sacrifice to God. But fornication and impurity of any kind, or greed, must not even be mentioned among you, as is proper among saints. Entirely out of place is obscene, silly, and vulgar talk; but instead, let there be thanksgiving. Be sure of this, that no fornicator or impure person, or one who is greedy (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be associated with them. For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light—for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true. Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
