THE BANNER
August 3, 2022
Note from Julie
Dear Friends,
As you will see below, our church is sponsoring a Rise Against Hunger meal packaging event Sunday, August 21 at 3:00 PM. This is a fun event for the whole family. No one is too old or too young to participate. Children can help on the assembly line packaging meals. If they become tired, art supplies will be available to decorate the boxes in which the meals will be sent to our global neighbors in need. With global food shortages increasing, the meals we will package with Rise Against Hunger are critical.
Please sign up as soon as possible using the link below! With a full complement of 50 volunteers, we should be able to pack 10,000 meals and clean up in time for Selah at 5:00 PM..

Grace and peace,
Julie

Join us for the Selah Service: Sunday at 5:00 PM in Davis Hall.
This Sunday some of our elementary school aged children will serve as worship leaders.

We are Hiring!
Do you love to spend time holding babies, building tall towers with toddlers, and sharing God’s love with our littlest congregation members?
We are hiring in our Sunday morning nursery! As two of our college-age team members head off to school, we are looking for at least one additional hire for our nursery team.
If you are interested or would like more information, please contact René Prager at r.prager@firstpresconcord.org or Merl Hamilton, Anita Brown, or Janna Mitchell on our Personnel committee.

During our search, we encourage anyone who is interested in volunteering in the nursery, to sign-up for one of the open Sunday’s: Nursery Volunteers: Sunday Nursery Volunteers (signupgenius.com)

YOUTH – If you are in 7th-12th grade and interested in volunteering in the nursery one (or more) Sunday mornings, please use the above link and select the Youth line under the date you can commit to covering.

Sermon Series on Revelation
This past Sunday, we began a six-week sermon series on the Book of Revelation.
The Good News comes through far more transparently in almost any other book in the Bible than this one. Yet, Revelation is a book of Good News! Images and symbols the original audience would have readily understood, require a bit more work from us if we are to hear the good news proclaimed. To its original audience, this book provided comfort and hope. It also serves as a challenge, for them and for us, to live faithfully in the present as we wait for God’s new heaven and new earth.

Devastating Floods
We have all seen the heartbreaking images from Kentucky where extreme flooding has claimed lives, homes, and businesses. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is in communication with Presbyterian leadership in the affected presbyteries to offer resources, process grants, and deploy National Response Team members when it is safe to do so. Offerings from One Great Hour of Sharing make that possible. To support this response, designate gifts to DR000191. You may:
-      Call PDA at 800-872-3283

-      Send a check with designation on the memo line to:

It's Back - Racial Equity Reads Returns
First Presbyterian’s “Racial Equity Reads” group is starting up again, and everyone is invited to participate.
The group’s first meeting will start at 3 PM Sunday, September 11, and finish by 4 PM.. Future meetings will be every other week in the the Library Conference Room.
The book we’re reading is “Dear White Peacemakers: Dismantling Racism with Grit and Grace,” by Osheta Moore of St. Paul, Minn. To prepare for the group discussion, please read the three preliminary pieces (foreword, preface and “Come to the Table”) and the first two chapters of Part 1. That’s a total of about 50 pages.
Please consider ordering the book from Shelves, a Black-owned book merchant in Charlotte (orders@shelvesbookstore.com). It is also available to order from Amazon.com.
Please email Scott Verner, sverner@yahoo.com, if you plan to participate, and if you have questions.
