On behalf of the Boerne Benedictines, we are saddened by the current death toll of 53 migrants who died the horrific death by heat and who were found in an abandoned un-airconditioned tractor-trailer on the south side of San Antonio, TX on June 27, 2022.
We are grateful for the lives that were saved by the action of the people who heard their cries for help and for the action of the First Responders. We pray for the eternal rest for those who died, for consolation for their families back home and for healing for those still in hospitals.
I can only imagine that what these migrants were trying to find was a better life by seeking work to sustain them and their families. Instead, they were victims of those who are unscrupulous and who take advantage of the poor.
Let us join in prayer for those who died and for those who survived this ordeal. Let us also contact those we have elected to represent us in Washington to enact just immigration policies.

Safety and Generosity in Boerne |

The Benedictine Sisters of Boerne are recipients of a welcomed donation of 80 Kidde smoke detectors from the Boerne Fire Marshal’s Office. The detectors, donated by a generous community partner, will be used in the many buildings on the Benedictine grounds as well as in St. Scholastica Monastery.
“We are so very grateful to the Fire Marshal’s Office and to the donor of these smoke detectors,” said Sister Bernadine Reyes, OSB, Prioress. “Our buildings can accommodate many guests and
the monastery is home to the Sisters. Replacing our smoke detectors with these new ones will give us all peace of mind.”
The Fire Marshal’s Office, a division of the Boerne Fire Department, is also in partnership with the American Red Cross to offer smoke detectors and installation to those in the community in need. Contact the Fire Marshal’s Office for more information (830) 249-3644.

Federation of St. Scholastica's Centennial Chapter in Atchison, KS |

Sister Bernadine Reyes, OSB and Sister Ursula Herrera, OSB traveled to Atchison, KS, to attend the Federation of St. Scholastica's 100th anniversary Chapter in June, as other Sisters participated virtually.
Among the highlights of the meetings were the renaming of the Federation to The Monastic Congregation of Saint Scholastica and the election of the Monastic Council: Above (l-r) Sr. Ann Wambach, OSB from Erie, PA, Sr. Elaine Fischer, OSB (first councilor) from Atchison, KS, Sr. Lynn McKenzie, OSB (re-elected president) from Cullman, AL, Sr. Kimberly Porter, OSB from Covington, KY, Sr. Susan Quaintance,OSB from Chicago IL, and Sr. Maricarmen Bracamontes, OSB from Torreón, Mexico.

Oblate Initial Formation and Ongoing Formation will continue in the Fall. Our Oblate Leadership Team is meeting this summer to finalize next year's programs.
