Changing the Face of the Engineering and STEM Workforce

Get Involved with DHS PEERs and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Efforts

The NSF INCLUDES Engineering PLUS Alliance is a nationwide initiative designed to build U.S. leadership in STEM by increasing the participation of individuals from Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), and women who have been historically underrepresented in STEM. Many of the STEM disciplines essential to the Homeland Security Enterprise face this same challenge. DHS is committed to the strategic goal of building “a workforce representative of America’s diversity”.

SENTRY, with funding from the DHS S&T Office of University Programs, is partnering with the NSF INCLUDES Engineering PLUS Alliance and its stEm PEER Academy to engage a cadre of 2024 DHS PEERs associated with the DHS Centers of Excellence and their affiliated partners.

A Summer Learning Endeavour SENTRY Hosts Research Experiences

This summer, SENTRY researchers engaged in two types of collaborative summer offerings: Research Experiences for Undergraduates and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Summer Research Team Program for Minority Serving Institutions. By offering these opportunities to students, SENTRY involved a diverse set of students and faculty in our ongoing research efforts, sharing knowledge, and embracing new perspectives.

DHS Scientific Leadership Awards

SENTRY expands our collaborative efforts with participation in the DHS Scientific Leadership Awards Program. This groundbreaking initiative recognizes excellence at minority serving institutions by providing grants to cultivate research contributions to homeland security. As part of this program, we look forward to collaborating with North Carolina Central University (NCCU) on their project to enhance homeland security-related research and educational infrastructure.

For more details on the program, including NCCU’s project, read the official announcement by the Department of Homeland Security.
