Dear Friends-

When Margaret and I were in Toledo, Spain in October we visited the Museo Tesoro Catedralicio, which houses one of eight paintings that the Baroque artist Carravagio created of John the Baptist.

In that painting, Carravagio depicts John as a young man, rather than the more traditional way he is shown either an infant, together with the infant Jesus and possibly his own and Jesus' mother, or as an adult, frequently in the act of baptizing his cousin Jesus.

It was nice to be reintroduced to the forerunner we hear from once again in this Sunday’s Gospel.

I’ve always had a soft spot for John the Baptist. His prophetic voice (you brood of vipers!), strange attire (camel hair cloak) and diet (locusts and honey) didn’t earn him any prizes. But his ministry of baptism prepared the way for Jesus’ ministry.

We’ll have the chance to hear from John again this second Sunday of Advent.

Please join us!

Calling all angels, Wise men & Shepherds!

Children of all ages are needed to stage this year’s Christmas Pageant. Held during the family service at 3:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve, this annual tradition has a place for all! Please reach out to Wink van Ogtrop with the names and ages of your children or grandchildren. Wink can be reached at winkvo@me.com. Rehearsal will take place at 2:15 on the day of the pageant and there will be an optional rehearsal on Sunday, December 19 following the 10:00 a.m. service.

St. Peter's Christmas Tree lighting was wonderful!

Thank you to all who made the annual Christmas Tree lighting such a huge success. Despite the 'liquid snow', we were able to ring in the season with carols, food and conversation.

We'll continue to collect winter clothing for our partners at St. Stephen's (Roxbury) Youth Program through Wednesday, December 7th.

Thank you!

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES

St. Stephen's Church B-SPARKLE Donations

Dear St. Peter’s Parishioners and Friends,

This year we will once again be partnering with St. Stephen’s Church in Boston to purchase Christmas presents for kids. Unlike past years where we picked names from a tree for individual families, this year St. Stephen’s is using a new format to ensure an equitable distribution for the many families they serve. Please use the Sign-up Genius LINK to select one or more presents that you would like to donate. Please note that there is a Reference List provided (CLICK HERE TO SEE THE REFERENCE LIST) if you want to buy something different from the items on the Sign-Up Genius. If you prefer, you can make a secure donation through St. Stephen’s website and select to have it directed towards B-SPARKLE, which will let us know to use that donation for holiday gifts.

All gifts should be delivered unwrapped to St. Peter’s by December 7.

Presents maybe left in the office.

Afghan Ministry Update

This Thanksgiving, we are grateful for all of the generous St. Peter's parishioners and Outreach Committee for supporting our Afghan neighbors. We are also thankful for the opportunity to be in community with our Afghan neighbors.

Thanks to everyone who purchased pillows at last week's coffee hour. The women who made the pillows are delighted that you like them. If you would like a different size, style or fabric, they are taking custom orders. They just received a donation of a beautiful red velvet fabric. Let us know if you'd like a red velvet pillow or two for Christmas!

Last Sunday, volunteers from Trinity Episcopal Church and several other volunteers hosted a social event for Afghan men. Afghan women and volunteers prepared a sumptuous feast, many gallons of tea were consumed (Afghans do not drink alcohol) and indoor games were played. It was gratifying to visit with the men and see how far they have come in settling into homes, jobs and the community. Everyone had fun visiting with their Afghan and American friends.

Most of the men are now working in factory jobs. Just in time for winter, only a few men need to walk or ride bikes to work. Most are carpooling with the guys who have cars. We're praying that the roads stay clear of ice as a lot of men work second shift and are driving home at midnight or 1 AM.

Thanks to a grant from the Outreach Committee, we have purchased winter footwear for men who need it, as well as winter coats for new arrivals who were not here last winter. The last of these items will be delivered to recipients next week.

Wishing all of you a Happy Thanksgiving!

Hansi and Karen

Home Communion and Prayer

church set up.jpg

Though many of St. Peter's parishioners have returned to worshiping and receiving Holy Communion in person inside our church building, we know it is not yet safe for all of us to do so. We will continue to live-stream our services so that we may include as many as possible in our offerings of praise and thanksgiving to God.

If it is not yet safe for you to worship with us in person, and you would like to receive Holy Communion and/or a share a time of prayer at your home, please contact the Parish Office.

If you would like to schedule a time during the week for private prayer in the church, please contact the church office.

St. Peter's is committed to continuing to make our worship space safe and welcoming to all. We hope to have you back with us in person as soon as doing so is the right choice for you.
