A MESSAGE FROM The Rev. Tina Rathbone
Today - as many of us continue to seek a way forward which includes room for hope - a poem. Written by the psychologist, author and teacher of Buddhist meditation, Tara Brach, it came to me through our friend, Cara Davis, who shared it with the Centering Prayer group the other day. Perhaps because it is formed around a question instead of an answer, the poem feels both energetic and simple enough to be actually useful. I pray it might be – this week especially…

The Question
(for Jude Jordan Kalush, who asked me the question)

All day, I replay these words:
Is this the path of love?
I think of them as I rise, as
I wake my children, as I wash dishes,
as I drive too close behind the slow
blue Subaru, Is this the path of love?
Think of these words as I stand in line
at the grocery store,
think of them as I sit on the couch
with my daughter. Amazing how
quickly six words become compass,
the new lens through which to see myself
in the world. I notice what the question is not.
Not, “Is this right?” Not,
“Is this wrong?” It just longs to know
how the action of existence
links us to the path to love.
And is it this? Is it this? All day,
I let myself be led by the question,
All day I let myself not be too certain
of the answer. Is it this?
Is this the path of love? I ask
as I wait for the next word to come.
GIDEON'S GARDEN
We have had two official weeks of dual Internship programs at Gideon's Garden, already our youth are findings ways to share peace and joy together. In the Taft Fellows program, Juan Diego insisted on picking up Jimbo, formerly known as Gypsy. Jimbo had not been handled by any Taft or Gideon's staff in over a year. Juan Diego, protected by gloves, goggles and a mask gently cornered Jimbo and lifted him to hug.
Meanwhile Cage had also been practicing handling George. George and Jimbo fence fight on a daily basis, as is their nature. Juan Diego and Cage had a different idea. The two boys brought the dueling roosters in close proximity and brought about calm and relaxation for the birds. A healing moment perhaps?
Our visiting groups enjoy the roosters (George and Jimbo) in particular and Joel has been allowing everyone to interact with George in a safe and accessible manor.

We shared the pond irrigation system set-up with supervisor Lisa and her crew froosters to a comfortable distance, holding a calm space for the two rom BCArc. They are thrilled!
The first week of the internship we spent time with the rescue animals at Taft Farms. The burrows and pony were a favorite.

Thank you for the meals you have provided to our students (and us!) Mimi and Dick the first week, Monique and Peter, and Laura Jordahl covered our second week.

The second week we got into projects sawing boards into sign post sized pieces to mark the field rows.

UKRAINE CRISIS FUND: Urgent aid for 4 million — Give now
CARE’s immediate crisis response aims to reach 4 million with your help.
Give now to rush urgently needed water, food, hygiene kits, and ongoing support for Ukrainian families.
The following note is from Ludmyla (Myla), who Andrea Saville White met through a knitting, and weaving website community.

I live in NJ with my husband and our two daughters, but I was born in Ukraine - Zhytomyr, a small town near Kyiv, and lived for 21 years in Kharkiv, Ukraine. All my grandparents, great grandparents, uncles, and aunts are buried there. My first school, first love, first steps, first friends, best friends, college and smiles and laughter, and peace - all left in the past.

What can I say without tears - I stand against this horrible war; I stand with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. So, so many of my friends and their families and some of my relatives are still left in Ukraine all over the country.

We try and help every single day with whatever we can - whether it’s meds, trying to get people out from hot spots - like from under the shelling in Kharkiv and Dnipro - volunteer with local organizations, send help to so many of my friends who are refugees in Poland, Romania, Hungary, Germany, and Latvia, and help our amazing volunteers who are right there on the ground whether it’s on the border or in Ukraine.

Days begin with checking if all the people I know are alive and end with checking on the news and what I could help with following.

I can’t be on the front lines and fight for my homeland physically, but I can knit and help with information.

NO WAR. Spread the word. Don’t stay silent.
May there be PEACE in the world.

Babies are placed in the Home when their mother has died and they cannot be cared for at home.
It costs about $1,500 to support a baby over the time needed for the child to grow old enough to return to their home. Many years ago we at Grace decided to support babies at the Mampong Babies Home in Ghana at the rate of $1,500 per year. Your donations help us reach that goal each year. You can bring money or checks to church on Sundays and place in the jar near the Welcome table or send a check to Grace Church, PO Box 114, Great Barrington, MA 01230.

A Pastoral Word from the Bishop:
The Shooting at St. Stephen’s in Alabama

We are all distressed and deeply saddened by the shooting at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills, Alabama which took three precious lives and wounded another. When you heard this I’m sure, like me, you stopped what you were doing and offered fervent prayers to the Living God. We can only imagine the anguish these families and St. Stephen’s is feeling. As St. Paul tells us in his first letter to the Corinthians, if one member of the body suffers, we all suffer together (1 Corinthians 12:26).

But these prayers that arise from our souls are offered in a context. Unlike political leaders that offer “thoughts and prayers” and then do nothing about gun violence, the Episcopal Church is committed to stopping the carnage. We are committed to keep on praying and we are committed to action. And we have been for a long time. Bishops United Against Gun Violence has called gun violence a “a public health crisis.” In his message on Friday morning, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry went further and called it “the plague of gun violence.”

Overturning Roe v. Wade"

To: All the faithful
Re: Supreme Court overturn of Roe v. Wade
Date: June 25, 2022
Friends,

We are faced with another painful decision from the Supreme Court. The first has made it easier to carry a weapon in public spaces. The second takes away the right of every woman to decide reproductive health care. Both are life and death decisions that will negatively impact many, many people. This may be a time of tears and bitter disappointment for you. It may also be a time of anger and frustration. It is, in either event, a very sad time for our republic.

I commend to you the message from our Presiding Bishop. Bishop Curry has expressed grave disappointment and acknowledges the impact this reversal will have in the lives of the poor.

Because we follow Jesus, we do not give up hope. And because we promise to "uphold the dignity of every human being," we will not accept the injustice created by this act. May God give us the wisdom needed for the path ahead.

Faithfully in Christ,

The Rt. Rev. Douglas J. Fisher
Bishop of Western Massachusetts

THE POWER OF PRAYER
O God! Glorious Creator.
We are powerless without you.
We know you are listening even when you seem aloof and your ways mysterious.
Our gratitude knows no bounds.
Thank you especially for this group and for other spiritual circles of which we are a part.
We pray that you keep bringing us into closer relationship with you and with others.
Help all those in the world living with fear to find your peace.
Through your son Jesus Christ, Our Lord, AMEN.

sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts
in partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts
God says, “Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way lies; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls." Jeremiah 6.16

What is God’s will for my life? How do I live my best life? What might this look like? Is what I want truly want what God wants for me? Is what I want best for myself and others? Perhaps there is something I’m missing? Perhaps there is something I’m blind to and can’t see? … these are the kinds of questions that we sit with and wrestle with together in our community of discernment called Loving the Questions.

We believe that you are unique, that you are gifted, and that your story matters. Our community of discernment aims to provide a safe and nurturing environment that honors the Spirit’s unique call to each person — that honors your unique gifts and your unique story.

We meet twice a month via Zoom beginning in September and ending in March. Our primary focus is rooted in prayerful listening to God using a format of group spiritual direction taught by Shalem Institute. Our aim in our gatherings is to listen more deeply and intently to God's gentle and loving desire for each one of us. Or to put it another way, “to stand at the crossroads and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way lies, so that we may walk in it and find rest for our souls.”

Registration is now open for 2022-23. For details, including our schedule, please go to our website at www.lovingthequestions.org. We also enthusiastically welcome any and all inquiries about our community and details about our gatherings. Please contact us at lovingthequestions@gmail.com to arrange a conversation to answer any questions you might have.

Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
Luke 10:25-37

Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? What do you read there?" He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live."

But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, `Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.' Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

The Monthly Vestry Summary

At the June Vestry meeting, we were so pleased to use the new communications tool at the office. With a large screen video monitor and a special sound bar, remote participants can now see—and hear—every member of a meeting group sitting around the large table. This set-up is portable and is being used in the Wednesday Contemplative Eucharist and on Thursdays for Centering Prayer, where former member, Elizabeth Holland, often joins from her home in Mexico. Tina and Pennie filled in details about the expansion of the community building project at the Monday People’s Pantry food distribution where they have set up casual tables and chairs to make visiting more inviting. The Vestry voted to donate to the financial needs of the Pantry, addressing the growing need for food assistance in our area. Three members of the Vestry have formed a committee to review the Diocesan Safe Church guidelines. This is to ensure we are conforming to best practices especially as we work with more youth in our community. Members of the vestry and those who work with youth, attend trainings and we are fortunate to have Safe Church Officer, Sarah Sieber, help us with this.

Praying for each other and for the needs of the world is a vital mission of Grace Church. To add a prayer request to this list, please contact the Church Office
office@graceberkshires.org or by phone 413-644-0022.
We supply this list so you may contact members of our congregation who are at home or in a nursing facility. Please hold in your prayers and reach out as you can.

WHAT ARE YOU
GRATEFUL FOR?
In this time of fear and anxiety, it can be easy to miss the daily blessings that are right in front of us. Being grateful is not just for good times. Being grateful is even more important when fear sets a place at your table and heartbreak seems to be in your every breath. Because by being grateful we become aware of all the ways God is working in us. Being grateful is a part of our healing and our deliverance. Being grateful is where our best selves reside.

SUNDAY SCHOOL
Kids of all ages:
Please join us for Sunday school. We will meet during the first part of the service and then
re-join the service at the Peace.

Mark commented on Koa’s work, “Dude, that is so beautiful.”
Koa answered, “Thanks, I like yours too.”
A DAY IN SUNDAY SCHOOL:
  • We thought about things we cannot see before we listened to a story.
  • Vivi - the wind, ghosts
  • Koa - Love; and we see the trees bend from the wind
  • Mark - Heaven. But I know what heaven looks like. (Andrea asks - I wonder…. Mark, how do you see heaven?) Heaven is a big green lawn with a bridge at the end. When we die, we go over the bridge, and we don’t fall; we go up. (Motions with his hands.) (Andrea - Is that where we meet Jesus?) And all the people who have died
  • We wondered about the Holy Spirit, and the words of Peace Jesus said to help his friends not feel sad about him leaving. And even though we can’t see Him, we know Jesus is with us always. God loves us.
  • We colored pages with the scripture and garden flowers; next week, we will make drawings to hang up in Gideon’s garden to give pictures and words for reflection.
  • We missed the timing to say the Our Father with the congregation - we’ll work on this timing - but we held out our hands to receive the prayer and prayed the Our Father together, bringing our hands to our hearts at the end.
  • AND we had a visit from Mark’s mom, Stacey, who brought Johnny up and some juice and gummy snacks for all to share - and bubbles if we wanted another activity sometime.
  • Vivi showed Johnny how to work the musical turtle. Johnny practiced walking and saying “mmm” with Andrea after each sip of juice. Johnny and Annalise made sounds on different textures around the room and talked about how they sounded and felt.
  • Mark brought “Catboy” and “Spiderman” to hold to help him listen and feel ok. Catboy is from a show that Mark, Koa, and Vivi all know! We, adults, need to catch up.
