Active shooter training enhances cooperation, readiness
|
|
|

Police investigate fatal single-vehicle accident on Orange Avenue
|
|
|
|
On Friday, July 29, at 12:26 a.m., Coronado officers responded to a single-vehicle collision in the 1100 block of Orange Avenue. A 20-year-old male driver and 20-year-old female front passenger were transported to a San Diego area hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. A 25-year-old rear female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The 1100 block of Orange Avenue remained closed until about noon on July 29.

Hometown Banner program accepting nominations
|

|
The Hometown Banner Program is an inspirational way for the Coronado community to honor the many men and women who have lived here during their military careers. Any active duty, veteran or retired service member who served honorably and lived or served in Coronado is eligible for recognition. Nominations are accepted on a continuing basis.

Coronado, EDCO offer free paper shredding event
|
|
|
|
|
The City and EDCO will sponsor a free document shredding and electronic waste event on a Saturday, Aug. 6, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the City Hall north parking lot, 1825 Strand Way.

Annual Spaghetti Dinner raises $11,500 for Burn Institute
|
|
|
|
Coronado Firefighters and volunteers recently held their annual Spaghetti Dinner at Fire headquarters. Proceeds benefit the Burn Institute. The meal is catered by the Hotel del Coronado with desert provided by the Coronado Island Marriott Resort and Spa and financial support provided by California American Water. With the help of the Coronado community, the Fire Department raised a record $11,500. The money supports Burn Institute programs such as Fire Safe Kids, Fire Safe Seniors, Camp Beyond the Scars, and other programs and services that education our communities to reduce burn injuries and empower those affected by burn trauma.

Kids create sun art prints
|
|

Join the Coronado Floral Association in a discussion about designing picture boxes in the Winn Room at the Library on Monday, Aug. 1, from 6-7:30 p.m.

Kids can learn how to use the power of the sun to create sun art prints using special paper in the children’s section of the Library on Tuesday, Aug. 2, from 2-3 p.m.

Zovargo animal meet, greet
|
Join the Library for a meet and greet with some animal friends including a bunny, giant lizard, snake, guinea pig, and a star tortoise, as part of the summer reading program. This event will take place in Library Park on Thursday, Aug. 4, from 2-3 p.m.

American Southwest Lecture
|
The story of Cabeze de Vaca and Estebanico will be the topic of a lecture by a former San Diego State University lecturer Maria Butler at the Library on Thursday, Aug. 4, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Crown City Classic Soccer Tournament Set

Coronado Youth Soccer League is hosting its annual Crown City Classic Youth Soccer Tournament the weekends of July 30-31 and August 6-7, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The tournament will use Sunset Park, all Cays Fields, Tidelands Park Ballfields, and the four CUSD fields

New Recreation Services programs this fall for kids
|
|
|
|
Fall programs start Sept.1. While we have summer camps for three more weeks, fall program registration starts next week, on Wednesday, Aug. 3 online for Coronado residents. Nonresident, walk-in, and call-in registration starts on Aug. 17.
New classes for parents and toddlers this fall include:
- Messy Adventures in Art, Tuesdays at 9 a.m.
- Baby/Toddler Ballet,Tuesdays at 10:15 a.m.
- Parent and Me Learning Adventure, Thursdays at 10:15 a.m.
- Baby/Toddler Dance and Tumble Time, Thursdays at 9 a.m.

New classes for preschoolers ages 3-5 this fall include:
- Tiny Tots choose Mondays, Wednesdays or both at 9 a.m.
- Preschool Ballet/Tap, Thursdays at 4 p.m.
- Preschool Cheer, Dance and Tumble, Thursdays at 4:30 p.m.
- Cooking Round the World Parent and Me, Tuesdays at 1 p.m.
New classes for K-5th graders this fall (ages vary with each class):
- Youth Makerspace, Mondays at 3:30 p.m.
- Cooking Round the World, Tuesdays 3:30 p.m.
- H2A Dance Teams – varies (auditions Aug.16)
- 3D Maze Class, Wednesdays 3:30 p.m.

Faline, a 3-year-old mixed breed, is this week’s Pet of the Week. Faline is an affectionate girl, a big dog at nearly 80 pounds that acts like a lap dog. Faline loves belly rubs, snuggles and sunbathing. She loves going for walks and is good with people and other dogs. She is ready for a home. Her adoption fee is $125.
