A Letter from the Director

bennett.jpg

Magic is a common subject around the holidays. I am a strong believer that there is magic in the air at the library all year long, not just in December. Last month the children’s department hosted DinoVember. The festivities included dinosaur-themed programs, crafts, storytimes, and even dinosaur footprints leading from the first floor of the library to the children’s collection on the second floor.

One day, I overheard a conversation between a little boy and his grandmother from my office in the library.

“Grandma, what does 'Do Not Disturb' mean?” the boy asked, pointing to a closed door with a sign and dinosaur feet trailing from beneath.

“Well,” she said, “you know how you cannot bother mom and dad when they are working at home?”

“Yes,” said the boy.

“It is the same thing.”

The boy paused and looked at his Grandmother, “Oh, so there is a dinosaur family that lives in the library! The mom and dad must be working behind that door.”

Magic is all around us at the library. The library staff, patrons, and services serve as a conduit of magic to young and old alike. The joy of brightening other lives by offering a place for imagination, bearing each other’s burdens by learning to navigate this world together through technology and books, easing each other’s load by teaching each other what we know, and supplanting empty hearts and lives with kindness and comradery is the essence of the magic at the library every day.

May the holiday season mark a perfect end to this year and may the magic of the library fill your homes and hearts all year round.
