Saint Andrew’s community,

Once again, I am a Virginia Theological Seminary student performing a summer internship with Saint Andrews. I am honored to be a part of your community this summer! I am both humbled and grateful for the warm welcome you all have extended to me in my short time here. I look forward to worshiping and exploring my call to ministry alongside you all over these next few months.

A few notices regarding my time with Saint Andrews. I will be working at the church through the first week of August. Sadly I will be out of town from June 10 to June 24 while I fulfill my annual training commitment to the Army Reserve. Upon my return I will be back to working with Saint Andrew’s full time until the end of my internship. I am available at the church during business hours Monday through Thursday and will of course see you all for worship on Sundays. I have a very flexible schedule; if you would like to get a hold of me during the week feel free to reach out to me via email.

I have several ministry initiatives that I am excited to pursue over the summer. Firstly, I will hold “coffee office hours” every Tuesday from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Starbucks near Saint Andrew’s (4526 Lee Highway, Lee Heights Shops, Arlington VA 22207). I would love to use this time to get to know some of you better if you have time to stop by for coffee and conversation. If you would like to speak to me at a different time, feel free to email me so that we can work out a good time!

Secondly, I will officiate evening prayer every Thursday at 5:30 PM in the nave at Saint Andrew’s. Evening Prayer is a wonderful opportunity for community prayer and scripture reading. Come as you are for a time of prayer and reflection as the day comes to a close.
Finally, in July I will be leading a group Bible study to read and discuss Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. We will meet for five sessions following coffee hour after the 9:30 a.m. service on Sundays. We will read all of the relevant scripture during these hour-long sessions so no prior reading or preparation is required! I look forward to exploring this important epistle with you this July.

Again, thank you so much for welcoming me into your community. I look forward to getting to know all of you better these coming months! Please reach out to me either via email or in person if you have any questions!

Yours in Christ,
Redmond Self

There's a Sweet, Sweet Spirit in this Place

Thank you, St. Andrew's, for so joyfully and lovingly participating in our Pentecost celebration this past Sunday! Many thanks to Brandon Heishman and our choir for their beautiful music, to Mallory Nonnemaker and our children for their embodiment of the Spirit's love, to our second language speakers for their glorious cacophony of sound, to Welcome and Fellowship ministry for an outstanding reception, and to all of you for your participation in Kamila's "community of advocates" as she joined the Body of Christ through Baptism. What a great day! Stay tuned for photos in our next issue of The Net.
Evening Prayer Thursdays This Summer

Saint Andrew’s summer seminarian, Redmond Self, will officiate evening prayer on Thursdays at 5:30 PM in the nave (sanctuary). Come as you are for a time of fellowship and prayer!
An Invitation to Wilderness Church at Sunset

Do you connect to God in nature? Join local Arlington Episcopal churches for a sunset Wilderness Church service at 7:30pm on the 2nd and 4th Sundays at Fletcher’s Cove in DC. The next service will be Sunday, June 11 at 7:30pm. Fletcher's Cove is at 4940 Canal Rd. NW, Washington DC 20007. Come via the Key Bridge, and once you enter, instead of parking by the old white brick building, go over the little bridge through the stone tunnel and down to the lower parking lot.

We will sing, pray, and have Eucharist together in God’s glorious creation, walking along the bank of the Potomac River. Come let the beauty of creation wash over you!
Compline on Wednesday Evenings

Each Wednesday at 8:30pm members of St. Andrew's meet via this Zoom Compline link for a brief service of contemplative nighttime prayers. All are welcome to join. For those who do not have a copy of the Book of Comon Prayer at home, you may download this Compline booklet.

St. Andrew’s Garden of Hope Update

Thanks to Anne for watering the garden on Tuesday and Thursday! On Saturday (5/27), Redmond, Sade, John, Nate, Jen, Susan, Anne, and Ted watered, weeded, planted tomatoes and peppers, and repaired deer netting. On Tuesday (5/30), Anne and Ted picked and delivered 63.45 pounds of produce to Rock Spring for distribution to Arlington Food pantries. Our current 2023 total is 115.45 pounds of fresh vegetables.

We need volunteers to sign up to water the garden on Tuesday and Thursday. Now with the irrigation system installed, you simply need to turn on the hose bibs (standpipes) and let the system run for 2-3 hours. You can sign up at the link below!

Our next work day is Saturday, June 3rd starting at 9:00am (Sunday, June 4th at 11:30am if it is too wet on Saturday). If you are interested in volunteering in the St. Andrew's Garden for Hope, You can sign up here on Sign Up Genius.    If you have questions concerning the sign-up, please contact Emily Blecksmith, our Parish Administrator.
