Today, Summer Moon, the “underground supergroup” (NME) formed by The Strokes’ bassist, Nikolai Fraiture, release their new EP Casino Days. The music collective features Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction, Camila Grey of Uh Huh Her, and Noah Harmon of The Airborne Toxic Event.
Casino Days, Summer Moon’s follow up to their 2017 debut album, is a five-song freeze-frame of what the band were up to right before the pandemic hit. Even though the title was chosen prior, Casino Days still resonates with recent events.
“In casinos there are no clocks, no windows, while cameras are inconspicuously trained on your every move. Wild aspirations of grotesque success hang heavy in the smoke-filled air. Fortunes change at the drop of the dice. This dizzying, heliocentric zeitgeist describes what we’ve come to accept as modern life now. But there is also wisdom in lunacy. The Shadows, like a musical rest, often hold a felt, yet hidden energy. ‘The Moon is always full, we’re just blinded by the Sun,’” says Fraiture.
Not long before the pandemic, Summer Moon spent two weeks at the legendary United Recording in Los Angeles tracking most of Casino Days there with Paul Hicks (The Beatles, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Elliott Smith), who co-produced with Fraiture, and mixed and mastered the EP.

Also out today is the post-apocalyptic video for the lead single, “STAR_CHILD.” The video comes from the prolific video director Liam Lynch (Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters, Royal Blood).
“STAR_CHILD is loosely based on the star people, alien-human subjects slowly remembering their origins. Liam Lynch, in his post-apocalyptic video, pointedly summarizes the spirit of the song. Following a catastrophic event brought on by the fall out of an AI/human experiment named Project Starchild, our two subjects awaken in a post-Anthropocene era, as they slowly become conscious of their predicament on an abandoned vessel floating through space. Having to adapt to their new surroundings, they question what is real, what is a distant memory and embrace what lies ahead.” – Nikolai Fraiture
