NSF MRI Program internal notifications due Friday, August 11
The National Science Foundation’s Major Research Instrumentation program changed its long-time mid-January due date to a date in mid-November. This means that the internal notification (working title, team/researcher list, submission type) due date for this very popular limited submission program changed to this Friday, August 11 at 5 p.m. this year rather than in mid-September as has been the case in the past. Internal preproposals will be due by 5 p.m., September 1, 2023. The notification and preproposals should be submitted to the Office of Research Development via ordlimitedsubs@k-state.edu.
NSF’s MRI program supports the acquisition of a multi-user research instrument that is commercially available through direct purchase from a vendor, or for the personnel costs and equipment that are required for the development of an instrument with new capabilities, thereby advancing instrumentation capabilities and enhancing expertise for instrument design and fabrication at academic institutions. MRI instruments are, in general, too costly and/or not appropriate for support through other NSF programs.

Webinar: Information for Prospective U.S. Applicants to the Trans- Atlantic Platform (T-AP)
3-4 p.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 15
Please join us for an informational webinar for prospective U.S. Applicants to the Trans-Atlantic Platform for Social Sciences and Humanities (T-AP).
During this webinar, NSF and National Endowment for the Humanities staff will provide an overview of the T-AP program and the upcoming funding opportunity. Following the presentation will be a question and answer session. T-AP is a collaboration between humanities and social science research funders from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. T-AP aims to enhance the ability of funders, research organizations and researchers to engage in transnational dialogue and collaboration. The current T-AP call on Democracy, Governance and Trust (DGT) seeks to understand specifically how democracy, governance and trust are integral to the tackling of both short-term crises and long-term challenges and are themselves a focus of the discontent and disruption facing many societies.
Register via Zoom for the T-AP webinar. Real-time captions will be available. If you require a reasonable accommodation in order to attend, please contact Kwabena Gyimah-Brempong in advance.

Within this century, climate change could lead to the collapse of a vital ocean current system—and it could happen as soon as 2025, according to a new study published Tuesday in Nature Communications. However, some researchers remain skeptical about the finding, which contradicts a recent assessment by United Nations climate scientists. Smithsonian Magazine
The study, published on 3 August in Science, could open the floodgates to linking the genomes of historical people to their present-day descendants — some direct, but most very distant. This approach could be especially resonant for African Americans and members of other populations around the world who trace some of their ancestry to enslaved people, say researchers. Nature
