Unexpected Recipients

For my husband’s birthday, Molly, our daughter gave him a gift that he is confident was more for me.

For it as called a “Nut Bar”.  And before I explain the purpose, I have to back it up by saying I am in love with wildlife…all kinds… and the sightings of any of God’s creatures (except for a skunk) just send me. But it is the birds that get most of my attention.  We are in Colorado and the birds have some competition with these tiny little chipmucks. And with that said, the gift was presented.

I will picture it above, but my point is this.  The purpose of the nut bar was for the chipmunks.  It was carefully installed on a tree that we could monitor, but flying and scampering creatures have dominated the consumption of the unshelled peanuts and the chipmunks haven’t even found it yet.

And how does this story have any remotely significant lesson for a God based devotional.  It is because we don’t always know how God will use our gifts for purposes and people that we had not planned of effecting. Words of encouragement, small kind deeds, anonymous gestures,a word of truth that may be passed on, a story of empathy or sympathy, and sometimes even when we do something for someone else, a bystander might be watching or listening and a nudge of God’s awareness may be felt.

God has given each of us an opportunity to be a friend, a helper, a leader, a confidant, or even just a sounding board.

Just as the little nut bar was lovingly installed on a nearby tree… so we could watch the activity of the critters indulge in welcomed offering, so is GOD watching from his throne on high as we interact with those he puts in our path, or allows us to be in contact with.  His love is a free gift to all of us who choose to accept it.  And when we do, it is our opportunity to pass it forward to others who might need that free gift of kindness.

The Lord gifts us each day… with the nature that surrounds us, the blessings that he bestows upon us and his power and love that he makes available to us.

May we embrace those gifts with thanksgiving and be mindful to share, encourage and uphold and uplift others whenever we have the opportunity.  We may never know how those little things may affect others who may be on the sidelines.

2 Corinthians 9:7

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Hebrews 13:16

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Praise God wherever you are or whatever situation he has allowed you to be in...for his Glory will shine through!
