Dear friends,

Last night, at our winter Lament with Earth event, we were reminded of the power of communal grieving — of holding space with and for one another as we navigate the profound losses and complexities of hope in these times. One of the meanings of the word compassion, drawn from its Latin roots, is to suffer with, to suffer together. As we move more deeply into the season of Lent, we know that doing the work of lament in community — and the work of joy, of attention, of imagination — is utterly essential.

We are continually amazed by the beautiful community which coalesces around our events, both online and in person, and we look forward to a spring full of opportunities for more of these spaces. If you are seeking a small group community to which you can bring your grief, questions, longings, and more, you may wish to participate in one of our Group Spiritual Direction Circles. There are still some spaces remaining, and we begin our next cohort in March. We're also so grateful to be partnering once again with the Chaplaincy Innovation Lab on Moral Injury from Climate Change: The Work of Chaplains, coming up next Thursday.

This summer, we are offering an exciting opportunity for congregations in Northern New England — our Claiming Your Call for a Climate-Changed World retreat, which will take place at the Schoodic Institute in beautiful Winter Harbor, ME. Applications are now open! And for the young people in your life, we will be partnering with Pilgrim Lodge to bring you our first Climate Justice Camp in July!

We wish deep connection and community through this Lenten season and beyond.

With best wishes,

The BTS Center Team

A Lenten Resource from Creation Justice Ministries

Our friends and collaborators at Creation Justice Ministries have created a wonderful resource to use in taking one step to care for God's creation every day of Lent. This Lenten reflection and action guide will help individuals take time to learn, reflect, repent, ask God for forgiveness, and take concrete steps to seek restoration and reconciliation. We invite you to check it out at Creation Justice Ministries' website here, where you can view and download the resource!

We hope you've had a chance to listen to Episode 5 of our second season of our podcast, Climate Changed — a fantastic conversation featuring Margaret Wheatley and Debra Rienstra. If not, now is a great time to listen!

And stay tuned for Episode 6 featuring Shanon Shah, which premieres next Tuesday, February 27!

You'll want to check out the entire second season of Climate Changed, The BTS Center's podcast, for a wealth of thoughtful and thought-provoking conversations with incredible guests. Head over to our Podbean page to listen to all of the episodes currently available, as well as Season One! On our webpage, you'll find links to all the episodes as well as descriptions, full transcriptions, and specially developed discussion guides which you can use in your congregation or community setting.

What We're Reading, Listening To, and Wondering:

  • We're wondering: what are your practices of compassion toward yourself and the earth?

A final word for your reflection:

"Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It's a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity."
