August Funding Focus Newsletter #2
What is a Limited Submission?
A limited submission solicitation (RFA, RFP, etc.) places a cap on the number of proposals that Auburn may submit to a sponsor. Auburn coordinates limited submissions by sending out a notification via this newsletter and creating competitions in the Auburn University Competition Space (also known as InfoReady). To apply to any limited submission posted in this newsletter, click on the link below and search for your competition listed on the page. Please refer to the Limited Submission Procedures page for a general list of requirements. However, it is recommended that you go to the specific competition as soon as possible and review the requirements to ensure that you are preparing what is requested since the required information for competitions may vary.
Found a Limited Submission opportunity that interests you?
If so, please contact the PSFS office sooner than later so that an internal competition can be created for a timely, university-wide, fair and equitable selection process that allows for ample time for review, feedback and revisions.

The National Quantum Initiative (NQI) Act1 aims to ensure the continuing leadership of the United States (U.S.) in quantum information science and technology. With this program solicitation, NSF is introducing the National Quantum Virtual Laboratory (NQVL) concept as an overarching shared infrastructure designed to facilitate the translation from basic science and engineering to the resultant technology, while at the same time emphasizing and advancing its scientific and technical value.

The NQVL aims to develop and utilize use-inspired and application-oriented quantum technologies. In the process, NQVL researchers will explore quantum frontiers6, foster QISE workforce education and training, engage in outreach activities at all levels, and promote broadening participation, diversity, equity, and inclusion in QISE, thereby lowering barriers at all entry points of the research enterprise.

NSF recognizes that the involvement of industry partners is essential and will welcome these to be a part of the overall structure. Partnerships with other U.S. Federal agencies under the NQI umbrella are also encouraged.

The highly anticipated annual Johnson & Johnson Women in STEM grant award program will not be offered for FY2024 according to their website.

“Over the past six years, the WiSTEM2D Scholar’s program has been fortunate enough to advance the careers of brilliant women. Effective August 2023, we plan to restructure and realign our program, aiming to open applications in Q3 of 2024 to select a 2025 cohort. Therefore, we will not be opening our application portal this year. An announcement will be made once 2024-2025 plans are confirmed.”

NIH: Leveraging Social Networks to Promote Widespread Individual Behavior Change

The purpose of R01 Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to invite basic observational or experimental behavioral and/or social science R01 applications that test how intrapersonal and interpersonal mechanisms of behavior change interact with, influence, or are influenced by characteristics of social networks, with implications for health. Research supported through this NOFO will examine at least two levels of analysis: interpersonal processes and social network characteristics. Projects will identify targets for future social network health behavior change interventions across the lifespan, especially in populations in which they are currently largely underdeveloped and untested (e.g., populations in mid- to- late life). Basic research to develop, refine, or optimize measures (i.e., assays) of putative targets (e.g., intra/interpersonal mechanisms of behavior change and/or social network characteristics) is also supported by this NOFO.

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) invites R34 applications to support the planning activities necessary to develop social network interventions to promote health across the lifespan, especially in populations in which they are currently largely underdeveloped and untested (such as populations in mid- and late-life). Applications suited to this R34 will focus on planning activities for social network interventions for which a target interpersonal process of behavior change or social network characteristic has already been identified. Planning activities are those activities that are expected to yield necessary and sufficient information to inform final decisions about a social network health behavior change intervention prior to instigation of a hypothesis-driven trial to test a social network intervention. Activities may include, but are not limited to, team-building, protocol development, piloting of systems for data collection and/or management, feasibility and acceptability testing, staff training, and establishing documentation procedures.

LOIs Due October 3, 2023, 5:00 pm CT
Applications Due : November 3, 2023, 5:00 pm CT

The goal of this solicitation is to support research that addresses one or more of the three themes:
