Remote Towers for General Aviation Airports
Two busy general aviation airports are benefiting from a Federal Aviation Administration pilot project to see how remote tower technology might provide air traffic control at airports that do not have an airport traffic control tower. Remote tower technology could also replace an existing tower that has reached the end of its life.

The Colorado Department of Transportation and the town of Leesburg, Virginia, have been working closely with the FAA to stand up remote towers and see how they work. The pilot projects are at Northern Colorado Regional Airport in Fort Collins, 50 miles north of Denver, and at Leesburg Executive Airport in Virginia, which is about 15 miles from Washington Dulles International Airport. Both airports have around 100,000 operations or more per year. Neither had a traditional tower when the remote tower projects started. About 8,000 of the operations at Northern Colorado Regional Airport involve turbojet business and private aviation aircraft. More...
A 2030 Deadline to Replace 100LL
In February, then-FAA Administrator Steve Dickson launched the EAGLE (Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions) initiative to eliminate leaded fuel by 2030. It won’t be easy, as the FAA and industry have been working on this for many years, most recently with the Piston Aviation Fuels Initiative started in 2013. EAGLE doesn’t replace PAFI but will rely on PAFI protocols to see that a 100LL replacement achieves a fleetwide FAA authorization by 2030.

What’s different about the EAGLE initiative is that the FAA and other general aviation groups are setting a deadline for getting the job done by 2030. There is a sense of urgency because the availability of 100LL that piston aircraft now rely on has a fragile supply chain. More...
