We ended 2023 and began 2024 with our hearts and minds focused on the future of our regional food system. Here's what we've been up to since our last volume:
On December 14, 2023, Central Texas Food Bank and Austin Community College in Elgin partnered on a pilot program to supply 150 families with free groceries. This area in Elgin is historically underserved and also highly accessible in terms of transportation so it was the perfect location for the distribution efforts to take place. Since the program proved to be successful, there will be an ongoing monthly distribution with dates to be determined. If you’d like more information or wish to volunteer, click here.
In collaboration with the City of Bastrop's Inaugural Mardi Gras Celebration we are hosting the First Ever Gumbo Cook-Off on February, 3, 2024 as a fundraiser for the coalition.
We appreciate H-E-B's sponsorship of this event. H-E-B will be onsite with their own gumbo team "H-E-B's UnRouxLy Crew" and they will have a kids activity tent with their mascot H-E-Buddy! Stop by, take a selfie, and tag @HEB.
The Elgin Farmers' Market began accepting SNAP transactions in July 2023. Participation from patrons has slowly been building. In hopes to gain more traction and provide more nutritious food to the community, on January 18, 2024, the Market launched the Double Up Food Bucks program in collaboration with the Sustainable Food Center.
This program extends customers' dollars further by doubling up their SNAP transactions up to $30 at no additional cost to them for fruits and vegetables.
We've actively been updating the BCC Community Calendar with local food resources and events!
