SETTLED SEARCH TEAM UPDATE
|
|
Thank you to the many people who filled out the minister search survey this past weekend; you pushed us from 33 to 49 percent of our goal of 200 respondents. By the time you read this there will be fewer than three days left in the survey window, so if you haven’t completed your survey at https://uucuc.org/ministersurvey then please do so as soon as you can. And if you have already filled yours out, please reach out to your fellow congregants and nag, er… ask them to do theirs as well. The more responses we get, the more complete a picture we have of the congregation’s desires. You don’t have to be a member to register your opinions; we want to hear from everybody who considers themselves a part of this church family, whether they’ve signed the book or not.

UPCOMING MEETINGS, CLASSES & EVENTS

The Red Herring Restaurant and the UU Channing Murray Foundation are dedicated to amplifying LGBTQ voices on campus! All are invited to attend the upcoming Queer Open Mic, on Sept 28. And if you aren’t sure whether the raucous packed house of the Open Mic is for you, try joining Rev. Sally for the more reflective “Open Write” space one week earlier (Sept 21) for a chance to write, share, and workshop reflections on sexuality, bodies, identity, and experience.

Norma Ione Hilsabeck was born to Louis and Edith (Shanks) Hilsabeck on April 8, 1925, in Pana, Illinois. She moved to Urbana in 1944. She married Bill Childers in 1947. In addition to being Bill’s partner in numerous projects and adventures, she was the executive secretary for Harlan Moore’s building supply business. In 1957, Norma had one son, also named Bill. After her husband Bill died in 1984, she spent winters in Ft. Myers, Florida, with her sister Lois. In 2002, Norma and Lois bought a house across the street from her son, Bill, his wife Barb, and most importantly, her grandchildren, Gwen and Wil lie. For the last 6 years, Willie has been Norma’s caretaker. Norma lived a long and vivid life until July 19, 2022, when she quietly slipped away surrounded by her family.
To celebrate Norma’s life, we will have a service at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana-Champaign, 309 W. Green St., Urbana, on Friday, October 7, 2022, at 7 pm. Please bring a mask in case the church requires masks to be worn at that time.

From M.R. Rowland: I am grateful to have been invited into this church home and to have the chance to worship with you all live from Colorado Springs. I look forward to coming back home to sing with you all next week. Thanks for all the love that you have shared with me and my family.

SOCIAL ACTION OFFERING FOR SEPTEMBER 2022
|
|
Uniting Pride was founded in 2009 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to advocate for the equality, wellness, and visibility of the LGBTQ+ community in Champaign County. UP exists to create a community where all who identify as sexual and/or gender minorities can live full, healthy, and vibrant lives.
We have a few main areas of year-round work:
- Support and Social Groups
- Our support and social groups that serve everyone from our littlest littles up through our elders.
- Training and Education
- We offer free LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency training for anyone willing to have us. From schools to healthcare to private businesses to faith groups to community groups and more.
- Advocacy
- An area of growth for us is around Advocacy. Any organization like ours always works to put ourselves out of business. Our goal is that someday there’s no more need because the world is affirming and safe for everyone. Sadly, things are going the opposite direction. 2021 was the worst year in US history with the most anti-LGBTQ+ legislation ever passed and 2022 is on track to shatter that record. So we have formed an Advocacy committee to address this growing need.
- Programming
- And lastly, what we’re known best for: our events and programs. We produce the annual Pride Fest in the fall with our signature parade and fair and lots of other community programming. But we’ve also added a lot more this past year, from social to educational to adult to youth & family. We’re striving to create more safe and affirming socialization and community.
We need your help!
Of course, all of this takes resources to do. Uniting Pride is on an aggressive growth plan, again sadly, due to increased need. We’ve reached our max capacity based on the staff, funding, and resources we currently have, and yet there is so much more we could do if we had what we needed to do it. So if you’re lucky enough to be in a position to give, we thank you for helping us.
And we hope to see you at this year’s Pride Fest Sept 24th to Oct 2nd. Check out our website for information on the incredible week of programming we’re offering this year: unitingpride.org.
